Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia film reportedly has one of Netflix’s biggest budgets ever. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is slated to premiere on Netflix following an exclusive 49-day theatrical run.
The feature will reportedly carry a budget of approximately $280 million. Two-time Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Seamus McGarvey reflected on the scale of the project during an appearance on the We Need to Talk About Oscars podcast.
“I just find it tremendously exciting to go from a documentary, which I’ve just done with Lorna Tucker, my wife, and a documentary about a Chinese pianist, to Narnia, which is a 280 million dollar Netflix project, and with lots of visual effects,” McGarvey shared. “And to me, it’s a kind of cinematographic Pilates.”
The two-time Academy Award-nominated cinematographer further added, “It’s like the exercise in different creative muscles, and that’s exciting about it, that you can have like endless avenues of potential, creative potential, depending on the project and depending on the director.”
The film is produced by Greta Gerwig alongside Mark Gordon, Douglas Gresham, Amy Pascal, and Vincent Sieber. Melvin Adams and Patricia Whitcher serve as executive producers, with Christine Carias joining as co-producer.

The synopsis of the 2027 film, per IMDb, reads, “From Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Little Women), adapted from C.S. Lewis’s cherished tale.”
Beatrice Campbell will play the role of Polly Plummer in the fantasy-adventure. The cast of the film also features Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, Ciarán Hinds, Emma Mackey, Denise Gough, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Susan Wokoma, and David McKenna.
Before the movie becomes available on Netflix for streaming, it will be released in theaters on February 12, 2027. The release date of the film will seemingly clash with the Super Bowl weekend. It will be available on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
