Sydney Sweeney Confirms Barbarella Remake Movie Is Still In Development

Sydney Sweeney has confirmed that a Barbarella remake is still in the works.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sweeney was asked if the Barbarella remake, which was announced in 2022, is still happening.

“It is,” she confirmed.

When asked what it was that drew her to the project, Sweeney said, “I mean, Barbarella is just such a fun character to explore. She really just embraces her femininity and her sexuality, and I love that. She uses sex as a weapon and I think it’s such an interesting way into a sci-fi world. I’ve always wanted to do sci-fi. So we’ll see what happens.”

Horowitz also asked if there was any truth to the rumors that Baby Driver director Edgar Wright could be in talks to helm the movie. Sweeney didn’t answer the question and merely responded with a “mmhm” when asked if Wright had become an “acquaintance.”

What do we know about the new Barbarella movie?

In October 2022, Deadline reported that Sweeney was attached to executive produce and star as the titular character in a new Barbarella movie for Sony Pictures.

There’s been little news about the project since then; although, Sweeney did tell AP Entertainment in 2022, “I mean, Jane Fonda, she created such an incredible, iconic character. And I want to, hopefully, just fill those shoes and give more to a whole new generation – her outfits, sci-fi, the fun of the story. So I’m looking forward to it.”

Based on the French comic series of the same name by Jean-Claude Forest, Barbarella was released in 1968. Directed by Roger Vadim, the movie starred Fonda, John Phillip Law, Marcel Marceau, David Hemmings, and Ugo Tognazzi.

“The president of Earth sends space adventurer Barbarella on a mission to retrieve a scientist,” the synopsis for the film reads. “She crash lands on a planet and explores its strange customs after a man rescues her from captivity.”
