James Gunn Reveals 2 Characters Who Were Nearly In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s Afterlife Scene

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has revealed that he considered adding two beloved characters to the Marvel Studios sequel’s afterlife scene.

What characters did James Gunn almost add into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s afterlife scene?

When asked by a Twitter user if he had considered featuring the original Groot in Rocket’s afterlife scene towards the end of the movie, Gunn revealed that he did indeed consider adding Groot and one other character.

The filmmaker said he thought about having both the original Groot that died in the first Guardians of the Galaxy and Yondu, who died saving Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, be present in the sequence with Lylla, Teefs, and Floor.

Gunn decided against it, however, as he didn’t want to confuse anyone who hadn’t seen the other movies or at least hadn’t seen them in a while, noting that he wants the trilogy to be mostly “understood on their own.”

“In the film, our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days,” reads the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel’s synopsis. “Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was directed by James Gunn and was released in theaters on May 5. The sequel heavily features the backstory of Rocket — the armed and snarky raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper — and his history with the film’s villain, The High Evolutionary (played by Chukwudi Iwuji). Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now playing in theaters.
