Isabela Merced Joins the Cast of Sony’s Madame Web Film

Casting for Sony’s Madame Web movie is officially heating up. According to Deadline, Isabela Merced has booked a role of her own in the studio’s next MCU-adjacent Marvel flick. But as with other recent casting announcements, Sony isn’t revealing the identity of her character.

Merced will next appear in the upcoming Father of the Bride remake as well as 20th Century’s Rosaline, a re-imagining of Romeo and Juliet that will premiere on Hulu later this year. Her previous film roles include Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Dakota Johnson will star in the film as the titular psychic. However, it’s still not clear if she’s playing the Cassandra Webb version of the character (who usually appears as an elderly woman in the comics) or Julia Carpenter, a onetime Spider-Woman who inherited Cassandra’s abilities. The movie notably marks the feature directorial debut of S.J. Clarkson, who has mainly worked in TV. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Morbius) penned the screenplay from an earlier draft by Kerem Sanga.

The film’s supporting cast will also feature Sydney Sweeney and Celeste O’Connor, the latter of whom joined the project last week. Right now, Madame Web is one of several live-action Marvel movies that Sony has in the works. Other projects in development include Kraven the Hunter, El Muerto, and Venom 3.

Madame Web will hit theaters on July 7, 2023.
