Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel Announced by Sony At CinemaCon

The next generation of Ghostbusters will ride again. Via Variety, Sony Pictures officially announced a Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel during its presentation at CinemaCon. However, the studio didn’t reveal which cast members will return or who will direct the film.

The late Ivan Reitman directed the original Ghostbusters in 1984, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson in the leading roles. Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, and Annie Potts also appeared in supporting parts. All of the cast members returned for Ghostbusters 2 in 1989, but there were no direct sequels for over three decades.

In 2016, director Paul Feig helmed the Ghostbusters reboot, which featured Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones as an all-female team. Although the reboot didn’t share any continuity with original movie, it also had cameo appearances by most of the surviving cast members.

The Ghostbuster reboot’s negative fan reception and disappointing box office results led Jason Reitman to helm a new film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which took place decades after the original movies. Murray, Aykroyd, Hudson, Weaver, and Potts all reprised their roles in cameos. However, the film was primarily about a new generation of Ghostbusters, as played by Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim, and Celeste O’Connor. The sequel also starred Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd.

For now, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel doesn’t have a release date, so it’s unclear when it will begin filming.
