New Battlestar Galactica Film and TV Show Will Have a Shared Universe

The Battlestar Galactica franchise has been mostly dormant ever since Blood & Chrome premiered in 2012. Regardless, big things are on the horizon. Not only is a new TV series in the works at Peacock, Universal is also developing a movie penned by Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg. Updates on both projects have been few and far between over the last two years. But now, we have official confirmation that they will take place in the same shared universe.

Kinberg recently sat down with Collider to talk about his new movie, The 355. When Battlestar Galactica came up, he revealed that a second draft of the screenplay has been turned in. He also estimated how soon the new film could begin production.

“We are in the process of going out to directors and the hope is to attach a director and start prepping the movie this year,” said Kinberg. “It’s a megillah, humongous film and the prep will be a very long prep period so I would imagine even if we attached a director today it would take six, nine months to prep this movie properly. So at the earliest, we’d be shooting at the end of this year. We’d probably be shooting at the beginning of next year. Time will tell who the director is and then you or someone else will tell who the director is.”

Additionally, Kinberg revealed that he and his team keep in touch with Sam Esmail, the showrunner of the upcoming Peacock series. And luckily, it sounds like both parties are getting along nicely.

“In terms of the situation with Sam and the show, I can’t say too much about it other than there is synergy between the two enterprises and constant communication between us,” added Kinberg. “We’ve become close and been having a really good time together and there will be, for lack of a better phrase and it’s an overused phrase, a shared universe.”

Universal hasn’t announced release dates for the Battlestar Galactica film or TV series.
