Dolph Lundgren Says Aquaman 2 Will Surpass the Original

As exciting as it is to see Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II return for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the highly-anticipated sequel will also feature another familiar face from the previous movie. After his alliance with Orm ended in disaster, Dolph Lundgren’s King Nereus is coming back for next year’s undersea adventure. Expectations for the new film are high following Aquaman’s runaway success. Regardless, Lundgren insists that The Lost Kingdom will blow its predecessor out of the water.

Lundgren briefly discussed The Lost Kingdom during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Judging by his enthusiasm, the new film is coming along nicely thanks to the vision of James Wan and the tremendous cast and crew he assembled for the sequel. And even though it’s only been a few years since the last movie hit theaters, it sounds like audiences will be even more impressed by the visual effects this time around.

“That whole picture is just a class act,” said Lundgren. “Everybody from James Wan and Jason Momoa to Amber Heard and the producers. I think this one is better. I think the script is stronger and it’s more exciting. The technology has moved forward in four years, so I was really pleased to be a part of it. James Wan is just going to blow everybody away again by this tremendous world that he creates. He’s involved in every little detail, even every little piece of every weapon, and I think it’s going to be great.”

In Aquaman, Nereus memorably (albeit reluctantly) allied himself with Orm in the latter’s quest to become the Ocean Master and wage war on the surface world. His army of Xebellians also had a major presence in the film’s climactic final battle. But when Orm was defeated, Nereus’ daughter, Mera, convinced him to recognize Arthur Curry as the new King of Atlantis. So it seems likely that he will play a different role in the sequel.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters on December 16, 2022.
