Dune is Returning To IMAX Theaters In December

Just when we thought Dune’s theatrical run was winding down, Warner Bros. is bringing the film back to the multiplex to harvest some extra spice at the box office. Via Deadline, the studio announced today that Dune is returning to IMAX theaters for a limited time in December.

As Denis Vileneuve continues to remind us, Dune is the type of film that deserves to be experienced on the big screen. And because it was shot using IMAX cameras, moviegoers can see 26% more picture in IMAX as opposed to regular theaters. It also doesn’t hurt to hear Hans Zimmer’s score through a better sound system.

In spite of its day-and-date release on HBO Max, Dune has been a bona fide success at the box office. Over the last month, the film has made over $366 million worldwide and by this weekend, analysts expect its domestic total will officially cross the $100 million mark. Deadline also notes that over 13% of the movie’s gains came from IMAX screenings totaling nearly $50 million. And since its HBO Max run came to an end last weekend, the new engagement is the only way to see Dune before its Blu-ray release.

More importantly, the movie’s financial performance also guaranteed that a sequel, Dune: Part Two, will eventually hit theaters. The follow-up will adapt the second half of Frank Herbert’s original novel and could start production as early as next July. The film will arrive on October 20, 2023. Warner Bros. also recently announced that Dune will be released on Blu-ray on January 11, 2022.

Dune will return to IMAX screens starting on December 3.
