Ava DuVernay Explains Why the New Gods Movie Was Cancelled

Later this week, Marvel will release Eternals, a film based on Jack Kirby’s immortal superheroes. However, Kirby’s other immortal superheroes, the New Gods, have not been as fortunate. Back in June, Warner Bros. Pictures cancelled the New Gods movie with little explanation. Ava DuVernay was slated to direct the film, and she also co-wrote the script with Mister Miracle writer Tom King. Regardless, their collaboration will not make it to the big screen.

Via Comic Book, DuVernay addressed the topic during an interview on Sirius XM. Additionally, DuVernay confirmed that Darkseid’s appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League was the primary reason the New Gods was cancelled.

“I loved New Gods, which is the project that got axed,” said DuVernay. “The studio decided that they did not want to pursue a certain part of that comic world based on some things that were going on with another film in that world. So, before I even was able to kind of complete my script with Tom King, they axed it. But I already had two projects going.”

Darkseid and the evil gods of Apokolips are the primary villains of New Gods. However, Darkseid in particular has emerged as one of the top bad guys in the DC Universe. Since Warner Bros. has insisted that Zack Snyder’s Justice League isn’t canon, it’s unclear when or if Darkseid is going to appear in the DC Extended Universe.

Despite what happened, DuVernay is still producing DC’s Naomi TV series on The CW. She is also executive producing DC’s DMZ adaptation on HBO Max.
