The Suicide Squad Will Screen at This Year’s Fantasia Fest

James Gunn’s twisted take on The Suicide Squad is less than two months away. However, Canadians are getting the film a little bit earlier. Anyone visiting this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal will have the opportunity to see the movie on August 4, a full two days before its wide release in the U.S.

According to Deadline, the screening will take place in Montreal’s Imperial Theater one day before Fantasia Fest properly kicks off on August 5. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the festival, which is normally held every July. The event was forced to go online-only last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. And it sounds like they’re keeping the virtual theme 2021 (with The Suicide Squad being a rare exception). Julien Knafo’s Brain Freeze and Anna Zaytseva’s #Blue_Whale are also among the buzzworthy screenings this year. Additional programming will be announced in July.

Gunn actually has a special relationship with Fantasia Fest. He made his first trip to the event back in 1997 during his Troma days. And in 2014, he returned to the festival for the Canadian premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn also confirmed The Suicide Squad’s screening at this year’s event on Twitter earlier today. The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max on August 6.
