J.J. Abrams Says the Portal Movie Is Still In Development At Warner Bros.

Way back in 2013, J.J. Abrams and Valve co-founder Gabe Newell jointly announced a theatrical adaptation of the hit video game series, Portal. However, the proposed film hasn’t made it to fruition yet. Now, Abrams believes that the Portal movie is “finally on the rails.”

While speaking with IGN, Abrams explained that there’s a new script for the movie, and why he’s still excited to produce the film.

“We actually do have a script that’s being written for the Portal movie now at [Warner Bros.],” said Abrams. “We’re really excited about the take and the pitch, so it feels like that thing’s finally on the rails… It’s got enormous potential for a lot of reasons, one of which is because of the limited narrative of the game, as ingeniously told as it is, the potential of it is so huge. It’s gonna be super fun.”

Abrams was also previously attached to adapt Valve’s Half-Life, which shares a universe with Portal. However, Abrams indicated that his Bad Robot production studio is no longer attached to that project.

“The Half-Life thing, we’re not actively involved with at the moment,” said Abrams.

For now, Abrams didn’t reveal who is writing the Portal movie. Nor does it have a release date from Warner Bros. Pictures.
