James Gunn Says Kevin Feige Knows the Villain in The Suicide Squad

Even if Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. compete against each other, it doesn’t mean they can’t share some mutual respect, especially when they have some employees in common, like director James Gunn. Gunn will direct The Suicide Squad in the DC Extended Universe before returning to his Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But more than that, Gunn revealed that the president of Marvel Studios knows some pivotal details from the upcoming film.

“Kevin knew who all those characters were for months before we revealed them at FanDome,” he said while talking with Empire. “He still knows who the villain is. I think he’s pretty trustworthy with his NDA!”

Many details from the movie are still under wrap, including who’s going to play the villain. In the same interview, Gunn said that Feige asked him to make a great movie out of his DC film. He also revealed that helming the next Superman movie “was a possibility” for a while — implying that it’s not anymore.

The relationship between Gunn and Marvel Studios hasn’t always been idyllic. In July 2018, Gunn was dismissed from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to some controversial joke Tweets from years prior. Disney reinstated James Gunn as the movie’s writer and director a few months later, after the movie’s main cast asked Disney to bring him back. Now Gunn reveals that he got the call from the chairman of Walt Disney Studios, Alan Horn, just a few hours after accepting the Warner Bros. assignment.

“It was a happy ending, but it was also scary, because I actually got the call from Alan Horn long before it was announced: it happened literally the day after I agreed to do The Suicide Squad,” Gunn added.

The Suicide Squad should hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
