Scarlett Johansson Wants Florence Pugh To Carry on Black Widow’s Legacy

Avengers: Endgame marked the conclusion of Natasha Romanoff’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Scarlett Johansson will reprise her role as Natasha at least one more time in the Black Widow movie. That film will also introduce viewers to Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, a rival Black Widow and the closest thing that Natasha has to a sister. While speaking with Total Film, Johansson indicated that she wants to see Pugh continue playing Yelena beyond this film.

“I definitely felt that way from the very beginning,” said Johansson. “She stands completely on her own. She’s strong and different. She’s so different to Natasha…You also see the generational difference, too, in how they react to things, and what they’re careful about, or what they’re careless about.

“It’s so fresh, what she does,” added Johansson. “It’s very representative, also, of who she is as a person. She’s unapologetic, and confident in herself, and curious, and brave, and emotionally brave – far more than I ever was. And that stuff all comes through. It’s wonderful to feel like you’re witnessing something great happening.”

For her part, Pugh seems open to sticking around as the new Black Widow. But she also hoped that audiences will connect with her character.

“If that happens and I am lucky enough that people appreciate my character, that’s an exciting road to go on,” admitted Pugh. “I would be silly to not be excited by it. I think that being part of the Marvel club is a great honour. But we’ll just see if people like Yelena first.”

Black Widow is currently scheduled to hit theaters on November 6. However, it may be delayed again in the next few weeks.
