Sam Witwer Reflects on Darth Maul’s Cameo In Solo

While Sam Witwer is reprising his role as Darth Maul for the final episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, he also lent his voice to Maul during a cameo appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Ray Park returned to physically portray Maul in that brief scene two years ago. However, Witwer replaced Peter Serafinowicz, the original actor who provided Maul’s voice in The Phantom Menace. Via ComicBookMovie, Witwer’s recent appearance on Star Wars Holocron explained why he had to take over for Serafinowicz.

“There was stuff that had to happen once I got hired,” related Witwer. “There was a reshoot that had to happen because people like me and Dave Filoni were letting them know there were a lot of details that weren’t consistent…I don’t want to say that what [Peter] Serafinowicz was doing was bad. It just didn’t sound recognizable as the character from The Phantom Menace nor the character from Clone Wars. It was a totally different thing. They needed people to recognize the voice, so there it is.”

Additionally, Witwer seemed to hint that Maul had a different role in Solo before the script changes. However, he declined to reveal what Maul was doing in the previous drafts.

“In 20 years, when I’m fully an old man and don’t care about anything, I will say things that will blow people’s minds and make national news and stuff,” noted Witwer. “But no, I’m not that stupid yet.”

A new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is streaming tomorrow on Disney+.
