Netflix Signs First Look Deal With BOOM! Studios

It looks like more titles from the BOOM! Studios library are on their way to Netflix. Deadline brings word that the streaming service and the indie publisher have brokered a partnership to produce new films and series based on several hit BOOM! comics.

Netflix actually began mining the BOOM! catalog for new content last year. Back in November, Netflix secured distribution rights to a film adaptation of The Unsound, based on Cullen Bunn and Jack T. Cole’s comic of the same name; which will be directed by Shazam! helmer David F. Sandberg. They’re also reportedly teaming up with Matt Reeves and Peter Dinklage on a Last Sons of America movie. However, there hasn’t been any news on that project since last February.

BOOM! previously inked a first-look deal with 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios), which expires in January 2021. Their most high-profile project was their Mouse Guard film, which 20th Century planned to make for $150 million. Unfortunately, Mouse Guard was scrapped following the Disney merger. Regardless, 20th Century will still release its adaptation of Bunn and Vanesa R. Del Rey’s The Empty Man in August.

The new deal with Netflix covers both live-action and animated ventures. BOOM! founder and CEO Ross Richie and President of Development Stephen Christy will serve as executive producers on all of these. This also isn’t the first time that Netflix has signed a first-look pact with a major comic publisher. They made a similar agreement with Dark Horse Entertainment last year after the success of The Umbrella Academy.

“We generate 20+ new original series a year and are thrilled to partner with a company that is as prolific as we are,” said Richie in a statement. “BOOM!’s unique partnership model of controlling the media rights to our library benefits creators by positioning them to be packaged with high-end directors, screenwriters, and producers. We’re thrilled to continue our track record of translating our best-selling award-winning library with the best TV talent in the business but now with the undisputed leader of the new streaming era.”

“BOOM! characters are innately special, they’re colorful, diverse and varied and their stories have the power to ignite something in all of us,” added Brian Wright, Netflix’s Vice President of Original Series. “We can’t wait to bring these stories from the page to the screen to fans in every corner of the world.”
