Spider-Man: Far From Home Writers Answer Frequently Asked Questions

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Far From Home!

Last week, Spider-Man: Far From Home capped off Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But as with the conclusion of any chapter in the MCU, the film ended with a pair of post-credits stingers that left viewers hungry for whatever’s next. We obviously won’t get any real answers until Marvel delivers its first Phase Four offering sometime next year. Regardless, this isn’t stopping Chris McKenna and Erik Sommars from responding to the most common fan queries. While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the screenwriting duo behind Far From Home did their best to answer questions about Spidey’s new status quo.

One of the film’s biggest shockers came when it was revealed that Nick Fury and Maria Hill were Skrulls in disguise. This would ordinarily be the perfect setup for Marvel to launch a Secret Invasion crossover. But as Captain Marvel showed us, the MCU’s version of the shape-shifting aliens aren’t necessarily the enemy. Still, this doesn’t mean that Fury and Hill are the only impostors hiding out on Earth.

“It’s certainly possible,” said Sommars. “We didn’t write anything in specifically and we have not personally planned anything out, but I think it certainly opens up a world of possibilities that is very exciting.”

Additionally, McKenna insisted that Fury and Hill’s conversation about Kree sleeper cells wasn’t meant as a tease for Marvel’s future plans.

“Honestly, it was one of those things where we needed a downbeat with Maria and Nick talking in their disguises,” said McKennna. “We’d be asking [Marvel for] plot points and they’d be giving us little things here and there. That was one of those things they felt like they could be talking about the Kree. It’s that boring of a story.”

Of course, the surprise role of the Skrulls was arguably dwarfed by the sudden appearance of J Jonah Jameson. The decision to have J.K. Simmons reprise his iconic role from the original Spider-Man trilogy certainly made a lot of moviegoers happy. However, this wasn’t the JJJ we’re used to seeing. Several fans noted the similarities between this incarnation of the blustering newsman and his appearance in Spider-Man PS4 last year. Both re-imagine Jonah as a conspiracy theory-peddling podcaster rather than a trusted media personality. But as it turns out, McKenna and Sommars developed this vision for the character before the game was released.

“They were talking about bringing back J.K. pretty early in the process,” said Sommars. “Then it was pitched by someone on the team to have the Daily Bugle now be this internet kind of thing and have him be more of an Alex Jones kind of character. We all liked that idea so that’s what we went with.”
