Sony Will Sit Out San Diego Comic-Con 2019

Anyone hoping to see early footage from Jared Leto’s Morbius the Living Vampire at San Diego Comic-Con next month is about to be disappointed. Deadline is reporting that Sony won’t be plugging any of their upcoming films at this year’s convention.

Deadline suggests that because the studio has its hands full with promotional efforts for Spider-Man: Far From Home and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, therefore they don’t have the resources to spare for a Comic-Con presence. Sony won’t be the only major studio skipping out on the event. Warner Bros. and Universal are also skipping this year’s festivities. Rumor has it that Lionsgate will be sitting out as well.

Sony previously made a big splash at last year’s Comic-Con when they debuted new footage from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Venom. An appearance at this year’s event would have allowed the studio to make new announcements about their upcoming Marvel films. In addition to Morbius, Sony is also developing Venom 2 as well as an Into the Spider-Verse sequel and spinoff.

Despite some fan pushback, Sony still appears to be committed to establishing their own cinematic universe using Spider-Man characters. Amy Pascal recently revealed that there are still plans to give Black Cat and Silver Sable their own movie. Sony also wants to eventually branch out into the TV market with some of the characters at their disposal. Although an SDCC could have given Sony a huge publicity boost, it’s still possible the studio could show up at New York Comic Con in the fall.
