Disneyâs acquisition of Fox is almost be a done deal, but Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are still thinking about the Deadpool universe. The screenwriters behind both Deadpool films are currently making the rounds to promote their YouTube Premium series, Wayne. They also briefly discussed their time on Deadpool during a recent interview with ScreenRant. Though it hasnât been officially greenlit, the pair remain optimistic that  Deadpool 3 will happen, but not before Drew Goddardâs X-Force film.
Reese indicated that they intend to follow a pattern similar to Marvel Studiosâ Iron Man films. âAccording to the chronology that weâve established, X-Force will be next, before Deadpool 3,â said Reese. âItâs a bit of the âIron Man 1, Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3â model, in that sense. X-Force isnât being written by us. Itâs being written and directed by Drew Goddard, or at least thatâs the plan right now. Weâre not involved with that one. We do anticipate there will be a Deadpool 3 at some point, but itâs just a little premature, because it will definitely take a backseat to X-Force for the time being.â

Goddard signed on to write and direct the X-Force film in late 2017. Aside from the groupâs tragically brief appearance in Deadpool 2, there havenât been many new developments on the spinoff since then. Many assumed this was because Marvel Studios would be taking command of the franchise once Disney absorbs Foxâs Marvel properties. Apparently, Goddard is also still eager to helm a Sinister Six movie for Sony.
Wernick added that Ryan Reynolds remains involved in the creative process for any future films starring his character. âWeâre constantly in touch with Ryan, and weâre always throwing ideas back and forth via text and phone conversations. So, itâs always at the front of our minds. Weâll get there when the time is right, but as of right now, X-Force is next up.â
