Man of Steel‘s Fortress of Solitude is a scout ship or vessel, originally made for Explorer Guild teams. The teams used these ships to scout out planets.
In the comics, there are multiple iterations of Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, each with a different origin.
In stories set in Earth-One, the Fortress of Solitude was located inside a large compound. This compound was within a mountain range in an isolated region of the Arctic. While making the fortress, Superman took special precautions to ensure he was the only one who could access it. The fortress’s access was provided by a giant metal arrow-shaped key. This key was kept on the peak of a hillock, several miles away. The key was so large and heavy that only a person possessing strength like Superman could lift it.
On Earth-Two, Superman created two fortresses. The first was called the “Secret Citadel” or “Secret Sanctuary” and was built atop a mountain outside Metropolis. The second one was constructed in the polar wastes. Following Crisis on Infinite Earths, New Earth Superman constructed the first Fortress of Solitude using a device called Eradicator. The second fortress — a more compact version — was built by John Henry Irons using Tesseract technology.
Before Infinite Crisis, Superman used the technology of his father to transform the ancient ruins in South America’s Amazon into a new and third fortress. Following Superman’s fight with Wonder Woman after the reboot in Superman: Birthright, which destroyed an existing Fortress of Solitude, he made a new fortress by launching a Sunstone into the Arctic North.
