McFarlane Toys Takes Over DC Multiverse Toys, Reveals First Wave

It’s a new year, and new toy license deals kick in as of yesterday. In one of the biggest shocking shifts, last year Mattel lost the main DC superhero and Batman collector figure rights. McFarlane Toys which had made Image Comics figures for years, swooped in and nabbed them. So after all these years, the makers of Spawn finally got their hands on Batman. The first wave of McFarlane’s DC Multiverse toys should hit stores later this month, and there are many to choose from.

For the most part, McFarlane’s initial wave sticks to Superman and Batman in artist-specific styles. They come packed with trading cards to show just how specific. Known for ultra-realistic likenesses, they’ve opted for just one DC live-action character so far: Arrow. But the initial offering seems designed to showcase that they’ll regularly be doing animated, comic, and live-action styles. Armored and modern versions of Batman and Superman lead the offerings, with an animated Green Lantern and a classic Harley Quinn based on her animated-style Rebirth comics.

A special three-figure wave of Batman friends and foes features Nightwing, Batgirl, and Batman Who Laughs, with each character coming with a piece of a smaller scale comic-styled Batmobile. Sold separately, a Bat-Raptor mini-vehicle will hold one figure.

All McFarlane’s DC Multiverse toys come in the 7-inch scale, making them compatible and competitive with DC Collectibles. The latter company has also made some of these characters before, but their rights cover specialty stores. McFarlane’s, meanwhile, will appear at mass retail.
