The Age of Revelation event has seen many Marvel heroes die. Some of them died at the claws of Wolverine, who has been brainwashed into becoming the chief assassin of Revelation. Thankfully, Logan‘s freedom has been secured for the event’s big finale. However, this came at the cost of several heroes’ lives, including another beloved member of the X-Men.
Logan’s deliverance comes in The Last Wolverine #3. Written by Saladin Ahmed, with art by Edgar Salazar, the miniseries is not focused upon Logan. Instead, it centers around Leonard Two Bears, a First Nations youth whom Logan is mentoring in the modern day.
This mentoring comes in the form of anger management, as Leonard was infected with the Wendigo Curse and murderous urges. In the Age of Revelation future, however, Leonard has conquered his rage and become a superhero. He has also taken Logan’s codename as his own.
Leonard is recruited by Vindicator; the leader of Alpha Flight and, in this future timeline, Logan’s wife. She says she has a plan to save Logan, and recruits him and Nightcrawler to help her. However, her plan to “save” Logan involves killing him with the mystic Muramasa Blade, which can negate Mutant healing factors. This leaves Kurt and Leonard racing against time to “intervene in a marital dispute.”
What heroes die to save Wolverine?
Despite having given up her husband as lost, Vindicator is able to slap some sense back into Wolverine. The combination of her scent and cutting off Logan’s left arm allows him to break Revelation’s programming. However, this does them little good as the fight was being watched from a distance by Revelation’s other followers.
Vindicator stays behind to hold Revelation’s forces off while the other heroes get the stunned Logan to safety. The good news is that Nightcrawler is able to safely sneak them away. Unfortunately, the last twenty years had not been kind to Kurt Wagner, and he had developed a heart condition. The stress of using his powers after being inactive for so long finally added up, and he had a heart attack after one teleport too many.
To save his mentor, Leonard lets the beast within loose. This provides ample distraction for the original Wolverine to make his escape after Revelation’s followers catch up with them. The issue ends with Logan mourning his wife, friend, and pupil, swearing revenge on Revelation for all the lives he’s taken.
