It has been over two decades since Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel came to a close. However, both series still have huge fan followings and have inspired innumerable follow-ups in other media. Fan interest is also building in the upcoming reboot, now that Sarah Michelle Gellar is signed on to reprise her role. However, while David Boreanaz is reportedly uninterested in returning as Angel, his character will return in another way.
Dynamite Entertainment announced that it will publish two new comic series, based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, that will continue the adventures of the Scoobies. The new comics will be released as part of their partnership with Disney’s 20th Television. Dynamite has also confirmed that an Eisner Award-winning comic writer will oversee the scripting of both series, which will also feature covers by legendary artist David Nakayama.
Who is writing the new Buffy and Angel comics?

Both the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel comics will be written by Kelly Thompson. The author of Absolute Wonder Woman and co-creator of Jeff the Land Shark, Thompson is one of the hottest writers in American comics. She is also experienced with comic book adaptations of beloved television and film properties. Thompson previously wrote comics based on Star Wars, Jem and the Holograms, and a solo series for the G.I. Joe‘s Scarlett. However, continuing the adventures of Buffy and Angel is a personal passion project for Thompson.

“In my early days trying to figure out how to be a writer and what stories mattered to me and why — no heroine quite broke through for me like Buffy Summers,” recalled Thompson. “I fell deeply in love with Buffy, and following that, her whole world. Her ex-boyfriend is now a supernatural detective in Los Angeles you say? Inject it directly into my veins! But unlike a lot of other worlds I loved, the world of Buffy and Angel somehow never fell to the wayside. I could always come back to it and find something new, or something I’d missed, or something I needed. And I hope this new story we’re telling can do the same for old and new fans everywhere.”
Thompson has not revealed just where her comics will be set in relation to the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel show timelines. However, Dynamite Entertainment has confirmed the new comics’ interior artists and release dates will be announced shortly. It is possible the announcement may come as soon as San Diego Comic-Con 2025.
