Originally known as En Sabah Nur, the Mutant called Apocalypse is one of the deadliest enemies of the X-Men. The long-lived tyrant spent thousands of years testing other Mutants to ensure only the strongest survived. Now, his chosen heir will continue his work with a new name: Revelation.

The coming of Revelation will kick-off the next big Marvel Comics event this July. Revelation is the new codename adopted by Doug Ramsey, formerly the Mutant hero Cypher. The storyline will begin in X-Men #19. No other details about the event have been announced, but Marvel has released the main cover for the issue as a teaser.

Apocalypse’s heir Revelation explained
Doug Ramsey became Revelation at the end of the 2024 miniseries X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse. Having claimed a throne on an alien world, Apocalypse decided to leave an heir on Earth to continue testing other Mutants. This led to a contest of 12 champions, whom Apocalypse selected as the fittest of the fit. In the end, the winner was Cypher, beating out more combat-capable heroes like Cable for the honor of inheriting Apocalypse’s empire.

Apocalypse chose Cypher because he feared he had grown dependent on violence as a tool over the years. “Perhaps,” he told Doug Ramsey, “I need an heir whose weapon is his words.” In that arena, Cypher ruled supreme, having the Mutant power to understand any language. It was Apocalypse’s hope that understanding might allow Revelation to avoid the mistakes that Apocalypse had made in building his ideal world. However, it is unclear just how Revelation will work to make that world a reality.
X-Men #19 arrives in comic shops everywhere on July 2, 2025.
