Ultimate Spider-Man’s Costume Colors Come From an Unexpected Source

Spider-Man has one of the most distinctive costumes in all of comics. However, his famous red-and-blue ensemble doesn’t really tie to his namesake. While some spiders sport red and blue coloration, like the peacock spider and red-and-blue widow, they are the exception. However, the Peter Parker of the new Ultimate Universe was given a surprising source of inspiration for his classic colors.

Ultimate Spider-Man #2 by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto reveals the reborn Spider-Man’s new costume. It is reminiscent of his famous black suit, only lacking the white spider emblem on the chest. Sleek and stealthy, the costume enables Peter to strike terror into the hearts of the criminals he’s catching. It also scares his young daughter, May, when she sees pictures of his heroic alter ego in the newspaper.

When May accidentally walks in on Peter while he’s resting in his super-suit, she panics. While the new Spider-Man is able to calm his daughter down, she doesn’t like keeping his new job a secret from her mom or brother. She is also quick to note that she still doesn’t like his costume. Peter agrees to consider doing something about both problems.

By the end of the issue, Peter is second guessing his second life as a vigilante. While new to being a superhero, the “Old Parker Luck” seems to have found this incarnation of Peter Parker. However, his spirits are lifted when he comes home to find a drawing May left for him, cheering him on. The drawing is of a blue and red spider. While the issue ends on this upbeat note, it seems clear that May’s drawing will be the inspiration for Spider-Man adopting his classic color scheme in the near future.

Ultimate Spider-Man #2 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
