Exclusive: The Hellboy Universe Expands With The Sword of Hyperborea

The Hellboy Universe Expands With The Sword of Hyperborea

Within the last few years, the main storyline of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. came to an end. However, there are still plenty of stories to explore in the Hellboy Universe. Mike Mignola’s signature world (also known as the Mignolaverse, if you prefer) is expanding this January with The Sword of Hyperborea, a new four-issue limited series.

As B.P.R.D. readers of may recall, Agent Howards found the Sword of Hyperborean in Chicago. Regardless of how it came to be there, the sword transformed Howards into a mighty warrior. It may have also turned the tide in humanity’s darkest moments.

Rob Williams is writing the new miniseries in collaboration with Mignola. Laurence Campbell is the artist and cover artist, with additional covers by Quinton Winter, Dave Stewart, and Christopher Mitten.

“I love what Rob and Laurence are doing here,” said Mignola in a statement. “Building on what’s been established and expanding in great new directions, creating new characters, playing with different time periods and location—I think this is exactly the kind of stuff that’s going to keep this world alive and breathing, especially when done by guys with this kind of talent. I couldn’t be happier.”

“I was a major fan of the B.P.R.D. series, and of Hellboy and the Mignolaverse in general,” added Williams. “So getting the chance to collaborate with Laurence Campbell and Mike, and to tell new stories with new characters in that world. is hugely exciting. B.P.R.D. fans know that the sword Howards picked up in a Chicago temple had strange properties, but they don’t know how that sword got to be there, and they don’t know about some of the people who brandished it in the past.”

Williams also noted that “each issue introduces a new character and reveals their journey as the sword-bearer as that weapon passes through time. And we get to enjoy a few old B.P.R.D. favourites along the way.”

The Sword of Hyperborea #1 will hit comic book stores on Wednesday, January 12.
