DC Comics Announces Free Comic Book Day Titles

This summer, the DC Universe will undergo big changes yet again. DC Comics has just formally unveiled their plans for this year’s Free Comic Book Day festivities. And judging by the description of one of the titles, nothing will be the same going forward.

In Generation Zero, the heroes of the DC Universe will still be feeling the effects of the recently-concluded Doomsday Clock. The 32-page one-shot is actually two stories in one. The first, Flash Forward: Epilogue, is written by Scott Lobdell with art by Brett Booth, and serves as a continuation of the pair’s Flash Forward miniseries, which wraps up this month. In an effort to ensure the survival of the multiverse, Wally West takes a seat in the infamous Mobius Chair. However, he doesn’t realize that the chair has absorbed the powers of Dr. Manhattan. The resulting experience turns him into a God-like being who can see into the past, present, and future simultaneously.

The issue will also reprint Scott Snyder and Bryan Hitch’s “A Brave New World,” which appeared in Wonder Woman #750. That story took place in the 1930s and showed the Amazonian princess stopping an assassination attempt on FDR. Diana’s actions that day wound up inspiring a whole new generation of heroes, including original Green Lantern Alan Scott.

Fortunately, this isn’t the only thing that DC will release on Free Comic Book Day. The publisher is also putting out a flipbook sampler featuring chapters from new graphic novels aimed at middle-grade readers. Shea Fontana and Marcelo Di Chiara’s Batman: Overdrive follows Bruce Wayne during his teenage years as he continues to investigate his parents’ murder. To try and cope with his loss, he begins rebuilding his father’s car, which proves to be a journey of self-discovery in its own right. Additionally, writer Derek Fridolfs and artist Dustin Nguyen will tackle Batman Tales: Once Upon a Crime, a collection of stories that mashes up fan-favorite DC characters with beloved fairy tales like Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland.

Free Comic Book Day will take place on May 2. You can check out the covers for the DC’s upcoming titles below, then tell us what you think in the comment section!
