Exclusive: The Dark Phoenix Saga 40th Anniversary Covers

Next month marks the 40th anniversary of The Dark Phoenix Saga, one of the most popular stories in X-Men history. From Uncanny X-Men #128-137, Chris Claremont, John Byrne, and Terry Austin depicted the rise and fall of Jean Grey as she became Dark Phoenix, a threat to the entire universe. To celebrate the occasion, Marvel is releasing a few Dark Phoenix Saga 40th Anniversary variant covers in January 2020 by some of the top artists in the industry.

Superhero Hype is proud to exclusively debut two of these new variant covers. The first is Tomm Coker’s cover for Excalibur #6. It revisits the moment that Cyclops realized just how powerful Jean had become. With the power of her mind, Jean removed his visor and held back his optic blasts. This was also the first time he had ever seen Jean unfiltered by his glasses or visor. However, their happiness would be short lived.

The second cover is by Alan Davis, an artist who has had a few legendary X-Men comics of his own. Davis’ cover for Marauders #6 depicts the moment Kitty Pryde freed Wolverine from the Hellfire Club. Kitty made her first appearance during this storyline, and both factions wanted to recruit her. However, Kitty sided with the X-Men. She was also a critical part of helping the team survive that encounter.

Both covers will be available in January 2020.
