Avengers: Doomsday Directors Don’t Feel Responsible for Rectifying MCU’s Recent Mistakes

Avengers: Doomsday directors aren’t here to fix the MCU‘s mess. The duo says fixing past mistakes isn’t their responsibility with the upcoming movie. Joe and Anthony came back to the franchise after their last work, 2019’s blockbuster Avengers: Endgame.

In recent media interactions, the director duo revealed their honest thoughts on fixing the superhero franchise after numerous failed projects in the past five years. When asked if Doomsday will restore the MCU to its glory, Anthony Russo replied, “It’s a great question.”

“It’s part of the unique challenge,” he added, as reported by Associated Press. But he made it clear that their mission isn’t to right the franchise’s wrongs. “The thing that Joe and I have always appreciated about our collaboration with Marvel is: Our job isn’t to answer for the entirety of the MCU.”

How the directors view their place in Marvel’s larger story

Joe and Anthony Russo have been the most dependable MCU filmmakers, after proving their mettle with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They followed it up with successful entries including Captain America: Civil War before rewriting box office records with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

According to some avid fans, the Russos will make any Marvel project work, no matter what. Anthony explained, “We intersect it in a very specific way. It’s that intersection which is where we can make sense of things.” The Avengers: Doomsday directors have described it as “a profound shift”, taking everything “back to zero”, and starting “from scratch”.

“We never want to coast on the capital that already exists,” said Anthony as the duo revealed what really inspired their Doomsday return. “We want the greatest value of the film to reside in the new thing it’s bringing to the table.” According to them, a “foundational narrative concept” by co-writer Steve McFeeley forced their return.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026. Its massive cast includes Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova/Black Widow, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, and Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, among others.
