The scooper told subscribers they can “breathe a sigh” because the story will actually move forward. Episode 5, written by Breannah Gibson, airs on September 13, 2026, on HBO.
Lanterns unfolds across two timelines set in 2016 and 2026. The 2016 storyline follows Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigating a murder in Rushville, Nebraska. Showrunner Chris Mundy previously likened the structure to the “emotional mysteries” in True Detective season one. He described the story as less of a traditional whodunit and more of an exploration of why the mystery takes place.
The premiere ended with a flash-forward revealing Hal Jordan dead in 2026 with his ring missing. That twist turned Hal’s fate into the season’s central mystery rather than a shocking finale moment. The 2026 storyline connects directly to the murder investigation viewers follow in the 2016 setting.
Through the first three episodes, the series has balanced both timelines alongside additional flashbacks into John’s past. Episode 3, titled “OutKast,” explored John Stewart’s childhood and military background extensively. It depicted his father’s failed Green Lantern test and his own eventual recruitment by the Guardians of the Universe. Jason Ritter previously noted during filming that the story was “jumping all around.”
