Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s box office reign faces its biggest challenge yet this weekend. New predictions reveal whether the superhero sequel can hold off two major newcomers gunning for the top spot.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day still set to stay on top
Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks set to remain atop the domestic box office this weekend. The Sony/Marvel Studios sequel projects around $18M for its fifth weekend, a 54% decline. Deadline notes the superhero blockbuster keeps its stranglehold on the summer marketplace.
The film has amassed $863M domestically and $2.23B worldwide through Tuesday, per Box Office Mojo. Spider-Man opened to $360M across 4,487 theaters on its debut weekend in late July. The superhero sequel has since expanded to a widest release of 4,539 theaters domestically.
The Dog Stars and Coyote vs. Acme both debut this frame but are tracking below Spider-Man’s numbers. Ridley Scott directs The Dog Stars, which features Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin in a virus-ravaged world. The 20th Century Studios production sits at a lukewarm 36% on Rotten Tomatoes currently.
Ketchup Entertainment meanwhile resurrects Coyote vs. Acme after Warner Bros. Discovery abandoned the project. Will Forte, John Cena and Lana Condor lead the live-action/animated hybrid based on Ian Frazier’s piece. The film boasts a 95% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes amid fervent fan support.
The domestic summer box office needs roughly $280M more to surpass 2013’s $4.756 billion record. That season stretched 123 days with Iron Man 3 leading at $409M domestically. This year’s summer runs 130 days from the first Friday in May through Labor Day.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped to second place on its fourth Friday with $9.8M before reclaiming the top spot Saturday. The film shed 533 theaters between its third and fourth weekends. Roadside Attractions’ Sundance acquisition Buddy and IFC’s Idiots with Dave Franco also enter wide release this weekend.
