Wonder Man‘s new update explains Season 2’s cancellation better. The show’s cancellation came after Season 2 was ordered following a successful first season. However, a recent viewership report suggested why exactly the show was removed from the MCU‘s slate.
According to Luminate Data, the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II-led show performed fairly well in terms of raw viewership. Upon closer inspection, Wonder Man’s performance appeared somewhat lower compared to other most-streamed Disney+ series in 2026.
The Marvel show ranks fourth after Daredevil, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and The Mandalorian. Furthermore, the series’ retention rate, a measure of initial viewers who completed the season, shows a 48% drop-off from premiere to finale.
This means that only 52% of viewers who started watching Wonder Man made it to the finale. To add to this, a retention rate of 53% or higher is considered “safe from cancellation,” according to a Luminate analysis of streaming original slates.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II received a 2026 Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role in the Marvel TV show. However, the actor has made peace with the fact that Disney+ is not moving forward with a new season.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Abdul-Mateen was asked why Season 2 was being scrapped. He said, “I was told that it had something to do with the viewership numbers. I wasn’t told what those numbers were, but ultimately, for whatever reason it was, I think they decided that it didn’t make sense for business, and that’s the decision that we live with and we keep on marching forward.”
Although some dropped the show midway, earning it a low retention rate, Wonder Man is a critically acclaimed show. The series received a 91% rating from critics and 87% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
That said, Abdul-Mateen’s character could cameo in future Marvel projects.
