Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy recently spoke to IGN about killing Hal Jordan in the premiere’s final moments. The decision proved both thrilling and nerve-wracking for the creative team behind the DC Universe series. Mundy created the show alongside Damon Lindelof and Eisner-winning comics writer Tom King.

Mundy explained that the mystery at the show’s center needed maximum emotional weight for Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart. He stated, “We needed whatever that mystery was to be as meaningful as possible and as emotional as possible for John.” The death also served Hal’s own story arc across the show’s multiple timelines.

Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan appears shot in the head during the episode’s closing moments. John Stewart then discovers that Hal’s body no longer bears the Green Lantern ring. Mundy addressed this detail directly in the interview.

He said, “It felt like the right thing to do in a show about someone trying to hold onto this thing, losing it.” Mundy also acknowledged the gravity of such a narrative choice for the character. He added, “Obviously you don’t take something like that lightly.”

The show uses multiple timelines, so Chandler will continue appearing as Hal throughout the season. Mundy confirmed the team planned this structure from the very beginning of development. He noted, “We always knew we were going to do two timelines.”

Mundy also praised Chandler’s ability to make Hal likable despite the character’s rough edges. He explained, “Hal could be a bit of an asshole, but Kyle’s just not an asshole.” Chandler’s natural charm allowed the writers to push Hal’s abrasive qualities further than expected.
