Ryan Reynolds has broken his silence on the future of the Merc with a Mouth, aka possible Deadpool 4. The actor, who previously suggested his time headlining solo adventures was over, now hints that specific comic book moments are calling him back. The update lands two years after Deadpool & Wolverine shattered box office records and finally gave audiences the R-rated team-up they had demanded for decades. While the film seemed to close a chapter, questions about Wade Wilson’s MCU future never really stopped swirling.
Ryan Reynolds says another Deadpool movie will eventually happen in MCU
At Fanatics Fest 2026, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that development is underway on a project that will bring Deadpool back to screens. He stopped short of labelling it Deadpool 4 outright, leaving room for the possibility of an ensemble-led vehicle rather than a traditional sequel, as he has teased before.
“There’s a few really deep cuts I think are missing from the movies. I think there’s a few deep cuts from some of the comics… There’s stuff upcoming. There eventually will be another Deadpool,” Reynolds told the crowd.
These comments are a notable shift in tone. In November 2024, the actor admitted that the franchise “sort of swallows [his] life whole” and that he needed a break. A month later, he floated the idea of repositioning Wade Wilson as a supporting player rather than the central character, as most of his story as a leading man is already told.
What shape that takes remains unclear. A May 2025 report indicated the project would feature “three or four X-Men characters,” echoing the long-dormant X-Force film that was once in development at 20th Century Fox before the Disney merger. Now, the concept of a mutant ensemble led by Deadpool could have new life.
Reynolds first played a version of Wade Wilson in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He then rebooted the character properly in 2016’s Deadpool. Two sequels followed, with Deadpool 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. The third Deadpool outing became the character’s official integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Hugh Jackman’s Logan.
Whether this next outing counts as Deadpool 4 or something else, the project is moving forward with a clear focus on comic-accurate moments that haven’t yet reached the screen. It’ll be interesting to see which other characters Deadpool could team up with. No release window has been set. Further, it remains unknown if Wade Wilson will appear beforehand in Avengers: Doomsday. It releases on December 18.
