After Nicolas Cage, who played Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was revealed to be playing the character in Amazon Prime Video’s Spider-Noir, speculations about the show’s connection to the movie surfaced. Recently, one of the series’s showrunners shed some light on the connection between the two projects.
Spider-Noir and Spider-Verse movies have just one connection
The only connection between Spider-Noir and the Spider-Verse films is that Spider-Man Noir appears in both, and Nicolas Cage plays him. The versions of the character in each are variants from different universes.
Speaking to Empire Magazine while promoting the upcoming MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video series, Oren Uziel highlighted the contrast with just four words: “Same character, different universe.” He further explained, “It’s a different flavor of that character, even though it’s still Nic’s voice.”
The Cloverfield Paradox writer clarified that the show wasn’t a “continuation” of Into the Spider-Verse. He pointed to the film’s introduction of the multiverse, stressing how it allowed him and other creatives to make their own stories revolving around Spider-Man Noir.
Uziel elaborated that when it came to making Spider-Noir, developing “a version of Spider-Man that no one had ever seen before” was crucial for him and Cage. He added that he recently screened all episodes for the Oscar winner, who enjoyed watching them. The showrunner recalled the actor “[speaking] his own lines back with pleasure and glee.” He further recalled, “It was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced.”
Spider-Noir will first premiere on MGM+ in the United States on May 25, 2026. All eight episodes will then drop on Prime Video globally on May 27. It will be available to stream in both black-and-white and color. Nicolas Cage has promised a unique performance as series lead Ben Reilly. He told Esquire that he took inspiration from Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, and Bugs Bunny for the role.
Set in 1930s New York City, the story follows Reilly, a grizzled private investigator who previously operated as the superhero, The Spider, until his retirement due to a personal tragedy. However, he resumes his old career when a new and unique case comes his way.
