Fresh chatter surrounding Disney’s long-gestating sequel to Cruella has reignited interest in the future of the fashion-forward villain. New reporting suggests movement behind the scenes, as discussions about timelines and next steps begin to take clearer shape.
Disney and Emma Stone’s Cruella 2 rumored to happen soon
Rumors surrounding a sequel to Cruella continue to gain traction, with The DisInsider reporting that “Odds are good, the creatives and talent want to do it, the studio wants to do it, and it is all about getting the script and scheduling right.” The outlet added, “I bet we will see it in the next couple of years.”
The original film, released in 2021, starred Emma Stone as the iconic Disney villain and served as an origin story set before the events of 101 Dalmatians. Before the film’s second weekend in theaters, Disney confirmed it was developing a sequel. At the time, a Disney spokesperson said, “We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date.”
Emma Stone has also publicly addressed the sequel’s status. At the 2024 Palm Springs International Film Awards, she told Variety filming would begin “hopefully sooner rather than later.” She described reprising the role as “a blast” and added, “We’ll see… it’s a work in progress.”
Disney previously highlighted the film’s reception, stating, “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings” (via PEOPLE).
Disney has not announced an official production date for the sequel. Insiders say the studio and key talent want to proceed, pending script completion and schedule alignment.
