More than any other superhero team, the X-Men have a history of turning enemies into allies. With a few exceptions, nearly every character who started out as an “evil Mutant” changed their wicked ways. Admittedly, some did regress into their old habits. However, the Tooth and Claw anthology found one reformed villain committing a kind act that would have been unthinkable several years ago.

The current X-Men monthly comic centers around a team of Mutant heroes based in the town of Merle, Alaska. Operating out of an abandoned Sentinels factory, the team’s relationship with the local community is uneven at best. It doesn’t help that the current roster is mostly made up of former criminals, like Juggernaut and Kid Omega. However, it is another reformed villain who plays an unexpected role in the story “In Dreams.”
What X-Men villain just confirmed they are truly good?
Written by Alex Paknadel with art by Diogenes Neves, the X-Men story “In Dreams” centers around Magneto. The former leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants has had a rough time of things since the Fall of the House of X. A degenerative condition has ravaged his cloned body and rendered his mastery of magnetism unreliable. Once one of the most powerful Mutants on Earth-616, he now requires a wheelchair to visit the local synagogue.

It is during one such visit that Magneto is grazed by a car that slipped on the icy road. While his wounds are superficial, he quickly realizes that the car has crashed and caught fire. Worse still, the driver is unconscious and the fire has spread to where his young daughter is trapped in her seat.
In times past, it would have been a simple matter for Magneto to disassemble the car and lift the girl to safety. Without his powers, however, there is seemingly little he can do. And yet, he still crawls toward the flaming car, comforting the girl and instructing her on how to free herself, before pulling her to safety.

Years ago, this act of kind heroism would have been unthinkable for the greatest enemy of the X-Men. Magneto would have thought it pointless to save a human child. However, his actions in “In Dreams” prove that he truly changed and is a hero even without his powers.
X-Men: Tooth and Claw #1 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
