The Punisher Gets Exciting Update as MCU Special Wraps Filming

The upcoming Disney+ special The Punisher has gotten quite an exciting update, adding a legendary figure to the special.

What is the latest update on The Punisher MCU special?

According to a recent report from World of Reel, legendary cinematographer Robert Elswit was responsible for cinematography on the upcoming special. The Oscar winner was the cinematographer on films like There Will Be Blood, Punch Drunk-Love, Nightcrawler, and Ella McCay, and is best known for his work alongside director Paul Thomas Anderson

The Punisher special is currently wrapped in mystery, but we know it will see Jon Bernthal reprise his role as Frank Castle/The Punisher. The special recently wrapped filming, so we should see some more information about the project soon. According to earlier reports on the project, the special is likely to focus on Castle as he tries to escape Wilson Fisk’s private prison.

Outside of Bernthal, casting for the special has also been secretive. Recent reports suggest the Marvel Comics character Ma Gnucci will be involved in some way, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Reinaldo Marcus Green and Bernthal are both writing the Punisher MCU special, with Green directing. A Disney+ release date has not yet been set, though it is expected to arrive at some point in 2026.

Bernthal will also reprise his Punisher role in Marvel Studios‘ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which arrives in theaters on July 31, 2026.
