Tron has been a franchise that has pushed the boundaries again and again, and it seems that Tron: Ares, the upcoming sequel in the franchise, is doing the same. The Jared Leto movie showcases neon-laden cinematography and brilliant music in its trailer. It appears to be aiming for another era-defining sci-fi extravaganza.
But does it link directly to Tron: Legacy or the 1982 classic?
Is Jared Leto’s Tron: Ares a sequel to Legacy?
Yes, Jared Leto’s Tron: Ares is indeed a direct sequel to Tron: Legacy. There was ample confusion surrounding this, as not many seemed to grasp where this film fit in. But with the trailer now released, it is clear that the upcoming movie will serve as a direct sequel to Legacy.
The primary reason for this is Jeff Bridges’ return in the trailer for Tron: Ares. The new film brings the veteran actor back as Flynn, despite unplugging him in Legacy. Either way, Bridges’ appearance in the movie as the same character directly connects Tron: Ares to Tron: Legacy.
Moreover, Tron: Legacy was also a sequel to Tron, which means all the films are connected.
Joachim Rønning has directed Tron: Ares. It is based on a story by David Digilio and Jesse Wigutow. The movie stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson, among others.
The synopsis for the movie reads, “Tron: Ares follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”
Thematically, the Walt Disney Studios film will follow a structure similar to the previous movies. However, it is once again expected to impress viewers with its exceptional visual treatment.
Tron: Ares will premiere on October 10, 2025.
