EXCLUSIVE: Alex Ross Draws Tom Welling as Superman!
April 16, 2004
One of the most-discussed topics on the SHH! Superman message boards has been whether or not The WB's Smallville star Tom Welling should play Superman in the new Warner Bros. big screen adaptation.
Back in December, Welling said that he had been approached about the lead role when director Brett Ratner was still on board the project. "I actually went to Brett's house in Los Angeles and we sat down and talked about it a little bit, both knowing that scheduling would always be an issue," Welling said. "Basically, if that movie were to happen, the show would pretty much have to go away, and I don't think that's what anybody wants."
Now, artist Alex Ross has provided Superhero Hype! with an exclusive look at two drawings he did for the possible film, were Welling to play the role. The drawings were not done for the studio, Alex did these on his own to see what Welling might look like. You can view the drawings below, and also be sure to stay tuned to AlexRossArt.com for the latest on his projects.

I think Tom Welling would make a great superman, Smallville is prolly on its way out anyway with the departure of Lex and Lana, so they should hold off and give him the role. I love him and I wish he knew i existed.

It`s interesting that even though this post is four years old,I would still say that Welling would be perfect for the role of Superman in Mark Millar`s proposed reboot of the Superman franchise(if of course,it actually becomes a reality and if Welling actually wanted the role).
After all of those seasons on Smallville I think that it`s time for Clark to leave Smallville and move to Metropolis and realize his destiny as the future man of steel.Besides Tom Welling is 31 years old and Clark Kent is supposed to be in his early thirties when he becomes Superman.

Actually, CK becomes the Man of Steel at 25 not his early thirties.
Look it up

Finally! It made sense from when Smallville started so long ago, he can act, and I would love him as Superman. The dude can't be that in the show (it's called Smallville) and so I hope this is like a spiritual sequel to the show, and it can finally end.

Good God. This will suck with any of this smallville crap making the big screen.
Posted by: spideyellis on September 5, 2008 at 09:43:41
it could work
id watch it
ive gone off smallville a bit anyway
its getting old now
id rather have a reboot of the superman movies then another 6 seasons of Smallville
i wanted Welling to play him on Singer's 'Returns'
superman having a kid in that movie is lame btw, just wanted to throw that in there ; )

To Nightwing 27`s post-actually I did look it up. In different continuities Clark becomes Superman at different ages. And the actual age of Superman has varied throughout the decades that followed his creation.
Prior to the John Byrne 1986 retcon Clark was supposed to be around his late twenties of somewhere around 30 or 31 years old when he arrives in Metropolis. When he becomes Superman in the John Bryne revamp he never was Superboy prior to becoming Superman so it`s a different story. So yes,in the Bryne revamp Superman is supposed to be a young adult in his mid to late twenties. Some stories have him at age 25- 29 others have him all the way up to age 35(as Superman not when he becomes Superman)
But if Welling were to play Superman(sometime in the near future)he`d be able to swing it.Most characters don`t age in comic books, actors do. If Welling agrees to the role(if Millar`s proposal for a reboot is accepted I could actually see this working)I heard Christopher Reeves and a lot of other people say something very similar to this-I always said that if Superman can fool the entire city of Metropolis with just a pair of glasses and a change in the way he combed his hair that says one of two things. Either Superman is a good enough actor to win a Oscar every single year or everyone else in Metropolis are a bunch of idiots.
So in order not to believe that Metropolis(especially a intrepid reporter like Lois ) are a bunch of idiots we need someone
who can play Superman and Clark Kent like they`re actually two different people as Christopher Reeves did.
Because the basic premise was that the people of Metropolis always just assumed because he doesn`t wear a mask that Superman doesn`t a have anything to hide unlike Batman who obviously does.
We need a Superman who looks like he`s having the time of his life with his superpowers.Who winks out at us from behind the facade of Clark, because Superman is who he really is,not Clark as some people have said.He was born Superman he didn`t recieve the powers through some freak accident like Spider-Man or the Hulk-they`re a part of his genetic makeup.
You have to believe that this god-like being would willingly allow himself to be more of a public servant instead of just deciding to become a tyrant. Because as Batman once pointed out in the Superman/Batman series ''it`s difficult not to see Clark as a God when he floats in the sky and shoots fire from his eyes and how fortunate for us all that that thought never occurs to him''.
Bam Bam Murphy`s post makes a good point. To me the
only problem is that Welling is a a bit of a pretty boy and Superman, while said to be handsome in the comics never actually looked like a girl.
And Superman is supposed to have a clean-cut yet still very masculine appearance
(somewhere near but not too near John Hamm from Mad Men)
(I didn`t see it in Routh and I never saw that side of Superman in Welling when I used to watch Smallville). Welling is in his early thirties and he still looks like he`s in his early twenties. We have to see a Superman, not a Superboy whenever we see Superman on screen because I heard people say that Routh looked like Anne Hathaway`s twin brother(and even thoug I loved Superman Returns I still expected more).
But I guess we`ll have to wait and see what happens.

Hell yeah, Smallville has been such a succses, and after this eight season is over , I would love to see him play the Man of Steel. Reboot the whole Superman movie and give Tom Welling the role. Christopher Reeves has been on Smallville and the said it was a passing of the torch. The new Superman is Tom Welling!

Who dug this up?? This article is from 2004!! I'd seen this back then. Anyway....I think Tom Welling does a great job as Clark. It's good to finally see a Clark who isn't a bumbling idiot.
Posted by: jay on September 5, 2008 at 16:49:36
However....his sappy crush on Lana for over seven years is kind of sad. Geez dude....have you seen Lois?!?!?
Posted by: Charles on September 5, 2008 at 17:05:05
Hey they both are hot. Lana has that mysterious look about her. Just make you go nuts. Lois is more of the tom boy kind of girl but she can be sexy too. I wonder what’s like to have a job like Tom Welling, play Superman, make out with girls, and get paid lots of money. Must be nice!

This is what I'm talking about. Tom Welling is perfect for the reboot of Superman. Heres hoping that they use him.
Posted by: Mark on September 5, 2008 at 17:42:35
He would suck as an on screen superman.
Learn from batman, get someone with talent.

I surely hope they use him for the re-boot
"MAN OF STEEL"

Dude , Reboot Superman with Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum. They made 7 great seasons of Smallville, and everyone sees them as them as Superman and Lex Luthor.
Posted by: Charles on September 5, 2008 at 21:00:07
Hey when is someone going to make a smallville game, or a Superman game ( or at least one that does not suck ass). Smallville game is what we need.
Posted by: Joker on September 5, 2008 at 21:30:39
If it is going to be dark, how about a "Kingdom Come" Superman! I wish to see a mature superman than a girly tom welling!
Posted by: Charles on September 5, 2008 at 22:43:28
Hahahahahhah!!!!!!!!!!! yes DONNIE got right on the money

Alex Ross is Awesome !
Posted by: Matt on September 6, 2008 at 02:26:48
i like welling and smallville but not for a movie, its way to far off cannon for me.
Posted by: Rich on September 6, 2008 at 03:25:49
I love Alex Ross's art, but sorry...Tom Welling does NOT look like an adult Superman. No offense to Welling at all, but if you look at the drawings closely, Alex took some license on Tom's jawline and facial features, which is not as prominent in real life as depicted in the first drawing. I know people won't like hearing this, but fans need to be just a little more objective.

What you fail to realize is that Welling might actually be able to look this way. All he would have to do is get a personal trainer to build his body to match the picture. the sculpt of his face would naturally change as well. Welling wouldn't be too young to play a Superman in his thirties since he is in fact in his thirties in real life.!!!!
