Ultimate Spider-Man Mobile Game Launching

by SuperHeroHype

Leading mobile publisher MFORMA has released its latest Marvel title, Ultimate Spider-Man. The new action platformer, based on Marvel’s popular “Ultimate Spider-Man” comic character and Activision, Inc.’s console video game of the same title, is now available to mobile users in Europe and the U.S. and will soon be available in Asia. Featuring superior graphics and animation, detailed action sequences and plot elements, and the unique ability to play the game as Spider-Man or as Spider-Man’s arch enemy, Venom, Ultimate Spider-Man is the highest quality Spider-Man adaptation ever made for the mobile platform.

“Fans will love how Spider-Man comes vividly to life using a simple single-button web-slinging, wall-climbing mechanic,” said Brian Selzer, MFORMA’s senior director for Marvel Mobile. “They’ll also enjoy being able to play as either Spider-Man or as Venom with two distinctly different gameplay experiences. As Spider-Man, players get to wrap up criminals in webbing, rescue civilians, and fight the nefarious villain, Venom. As Venom, players can indulge their dark side and catch civilians with tentacles, feed on them for strength, and try to hunt down Spider-Man before he can save the day. Overall, the graphics and animations are certain to please even the most discerning Spider-Man fans.”

Ultimate Spider-Man is based on the “Ultimate Spider-Man” series of Spider-Man comics and the Activision console version of the same name. It is a 2-D sideways-scrolling action game that includes a variety of challenging missions, interesting characters and surprises, as well as splash panels from the comics that provide an added layer of interest. Players will recognize villains such as the Green Goblin and Shocker and will feel part of Spider-Man’s world in urban scenes with civilians, police officers, and gangs passing by. When playing as Spider-Man, you can use a wide range of moves, including the wall jump, web swing and rebound attack. When playing as Venom, you can use super jumps, tentacle combos, and the scary “feed attack” while you destroy the city or “feed” on your victims. The game features 24 levels of play, 12 each for Spider-Man and Venom, and a simple, highly-responsive control system that makes this game instantly satisfying to play.

“Comic book adventures will never lose their appeal and ;Ultimate Spider-Man; brings one of the world’s most beloved comic book adventures to the mobile platform with careful attention to detail,” said Selzer. “The game is a joy to play on many levels-it’s fun to experience the incredibly smooth animation of Spider-Man climbing walls, slinging webs and otherwise performing his famous Spider-Man antics, and it’s fun to wreak havoc as the villainous Venom, facing off against the ultimate web-slinging Super Hero.”

Activision Extends Spider-Man Agreement

by SuperHeroHype

Activision, Inc. announced today that the company has signed an agreement with Spider-Man Merchandising L.P., a limited partnership between Marvel Entertainment, Inc. and Sony Pictures Consumer Products Inc., to extend its exclusive worldwide publishing rights to the phenomenally successful “Spider-Man” motion pictures through 2017. The license grants Activision the right to publish entertainment software products based on subsequent “Spider-Man” movie sequels or new television series.

Under its current agreement with Spider-Man® Merchandising, Activision will develop and publish interactive entertainment games based on Columbia Pictures/Marvel Entertainment, Inc.’s upcoming feature film Spider-Man 3, which is set for release in May 2007. To date, Activision has published games based on Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2.

For calendar 2004, Spider-Man 2 was the #1 movie-based videogame in the U.S. according to NPD Funworld and for calendar 2002, Spider-Man was a top-five selling title in the U.S., according to NPD.

“This agreement allows Activision to continue bringing our own brand of interactive magic and vision to this unique, evergreen property and to build on the success we have already achieved with the ‘Spider-Man’ movies,” said Mike Griffith, President and CEO, Activision Publishing, Inc. “Games based on this phenomenally successful property bring the film’s popular characters to life and allow consumers to extend their experience with original missions and additional Marvel characters beyond those of the ‘Spider-Man’ movies.”

Tim Rothwell, Worldwide President, Consumer Media Group, Marvel Entertainment, added, “Activision has done a tremendous job in translating ‘Spider-Man’ into compelling, top-selling interactive games. Given their performance and long-term commitment to the franchise, as well as their creative excellence Activision is the ideal partner for movie-based ‘Spider-Man’ games, a business that complements our recent extension of their interactive license for ‘classic’ Spider-Man.”

According to Bruno Maglione, President, Marvel International Inc., “Activision has consistently demonstrated their ability to execute ‘Spider-Man’ theatrical games on a global basis. We are pleased that both Marvel and Activision will be extending our relationship for many years to come on this important franchise.”

X-Men 3 Updates

by SuperHeroHype

As the X-Men 3 promo machine gets set to kick it up a notch in December (the teaser trailer in theaters with “King Kong” and the official site becoming active), we’ve received new updates on the anticipated third installment over the Thanksgiving holiday.

First up is ‘A1ant’ from XMenFilms.net:

Recently discovered info reveals that Kelsey Grammer’s BEAST will have one of the most interesting roles in X3. Not due to his blue fur or his amazing acrobatics, but due to his point of view in the film. Brett Ratner’s X3 will really dig deep into the minds of mutants who are not blessed with ‘normal’ looks.

Halle Berry’s Storm, and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine can easily go out into public, and not be feared based off their looks, but what about the mutants who have more physical mutations? How do they think? We got a taste of it in X2, with the interesting exchange of words between Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique and Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, and now that very subject will be busting at the seams in the third chapter, with Beast and other groups of ‘strange’ looking mutants.

Even though he’s lived with his mutation for some time, Grammer’s Beast will still be struggling with his physical self. Dark blue, gray, black fur, and strong animal-like features aren’t exactly looked upon as ‘normal’ and at times in the film we will see him questioning something that might be able to help his problems.

Expect knock-out acting scenes shared between Grammer and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, and Storm, among others we can’t name yet.

You want drama? X3 will surely bring it to you. If done right, X3 will be the most dramatic X-film yet!

Sounds great! Next, ‘David’ wrote in with more about the “X3” feature on the Fantastic Four DVD (story spoilers ahead!):

I just hoped to have a first look at Beast or Juggernaut or something else before the official trailer hits with King Kong, but I found it quite disappointing. You can find a brief interview with Avi Arad where he tells how big the movie will be and bla bla bla. The only thing worthy is the description of the San Francisco bridge’s destruction by the hand of Magneto. The DVD extra shows sketches for the action sequence in which the bridge falls down and cars and trucks “fly away” from the carriageway. Actually Arad explained how the Magneto character escalates in violence in this movie and from what the penciled breakdowns showed that’s just true.

‘Stephen’ also told us about a Patrick Stewart appearance:

Patrick Stewart was on ‘The Chris Evans Show’ on BBC Radio 2 on Saturday and amongst other things he mentioned that although they were all sworn to secrecy about the details of X3, Alcatraz plays quite a big part in the film. And also that they were looking to hold the premiere there, although that may not actually happen.

Stay tuned for more news soon!

The Latest on Spider-Man 3 Filming

by SuperHeroHype

‘Retroman’ wrote in with a new shooting location for Spider-Man 3:

It turns out they have set up shop in Santa Clarita, California as well to shoot some scenes (special effects?). The official website of the Santa Clarita Film Office have listed some days they shot last week. The Pirates of the Carribean sequels, War of the Worlds and X-Men 3 are just some of the big-budget movies that also opted to shoot in this area recently. The first Spider-Man shot there as well.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the Superman Returns production has wrapped filming in Australia:

“There’s obviously more Australians making this movie than Americans so they should definitely have a tremendous ownership of this movie,” he said.

Superman Returns, the modern renewal of the much-loved film series, employed 10,000 people including up to 800 on any one day during its eight-month shoot here.

“We’ve had about 60 sets operating on nine stages continually and we built three water tanks,” Singer said.

Superman Returns Barbie Dolls?

by SuperHeroHype

Superman Homepage has the first pics of Superman Returns tie-in merchandise:

We’ve all wondered when the first item of merchandise for “Superman Returns” would become available, but I don’t think anyone had any idea the first thing to feature Brandon Routh’s likeness would be a Ken Doll with a Lois Lane Barbie Doll.

We’ve already seen a Supergirl, Wonder Woman and Catwoman version of Barbie. Now there’s a Lois Lane “Barbie” doll due to be released in December, and she’ll be joined by a Superman “Ken” doll.

Singer’s Superman Returns Presentation!

by SuperHeroHype

Scooper ‘Tim of LUZER’ was present at last night’s Bryan Singer lecture for “Princeton Library’s Christopher Reeve Lecture Series” where he, joined by executive producer Chris Lee, showed the Comic-Con footage and spoke in great depth about Superman Returns (among other topics), with Chris Reeve’s mom also in attendance. Here are some of the highlights from the evening:

* When a gentleman asked if the goofy aspect that he loved about the old Superman flicks would be in Returns, Bryan answered that he is trying to steer clear of “goofy” but it is definitely the most romantic and humorous film he has done to date.

* There is no truth to the rumor that there is a clause in Brandon Routh’s contract to do a Superman/Batman crossover flick, only a standard Warner Brothers multi-picture deal. Although I was later told that even though it most likely will never be seen in the movie, the set was so detailed that the Daily Planet newspapers were all filled with stories, including a “Bat Creature” being spotted in Metropolis with a picture of a shadowy Batman jumping off of a building with Jimmy Olsen photo credits. Very cool. Bryan also mentioned that the only time he ever considered a Batman/Superman movie was when Wolfgang Peterson was attached, and just thought how he would do it. “Who would be the bad guy? It’d have to be Batman. But he can’t be that bad…he’s Batman!” He said tonight was the first time he had thought about it since then.

* As confirmed already Noel Neill (The Adventures Of Superman’s Lois Lane and Lois Lane’s mother in Donner’s ’78 film) will be making a cameo, which Bryan described as a important one, in addition to Jack Larson’s cameo featured on Bryan’s Video Journal #25 and in the Comic-Con footage.

* When asked about Kevin Spacey’s portrayal of Lex Luthor (whether he was a scientist, billionaire, etc.), Bryan said that Lex is “fresh out of jail” and that his history with Superman and/or Clark doesn’t tread one way or another over the groundwork left by Smallville. Only that the two characters have some kind of history as we join them in the movie.

* Bryan agreed with someone in the audience that the biggest change to the Superman mythos he made was giving Lois a kid with James Marsden’s character (not a raised S logo). He thought this was something that you’ve never seen Superman deal with before that his version brought to the table. You’ve seen Superman save every disaster, but how would he deal with this? The world has moved on a bit, but it seems Lois has completely moved on.

* To keep Clark’s disappearance under wraps, Martha Kent sent postcards to Lois during his Daily Planet hiatus. In the Comic-Con footage Martha asks Clark “What about that nice girl you used to talk about? The one you had me send post cards to?” or something to that effect.

* There’s roughly 1,400 effects shots to be completed to the movie, and although obviously an expensive movie, the budget has been exaggerated a bit on the net, and is still roughly under 200 million.

* The opening credits will feature John Williams classic Superman march, with a new score by editor/composer John Ottman integrating old and new themes. I believe I also caught a mention that the opening credits will feature some of Superman: The Movie.

* There’s a huge plane action scene, briefly seen in the Comic-Con footage, that may run 20-25 minutes and is going to be BREATHTAKING and UNBELIEVABLE.

* A huge amount of time and effort went into fighting gravity so there wouldn’t be any “droop-age” when Superman flies, including clever camera maneuvers and several green covered men puppeteering the cape at any given time.

* Superman being able to breathe in space (and underwater) is addressed in the movie, and yes he has to breathe in Bryan’s Super-World. He is “too logical” in his thinking to let these things fall under the suspension of disbelief category.

* The raised S under the suit is addressed, as is the costume’s origin in some way.

* The sets are incredibly detailed, down to the stack of business cards on Perry White’s desk, and some of the props have already gone on sale at the prop department for cheap as heck. (Someone has already snagged Lex Luthor’s smoking jacket for twenty bucks.)

Superman Returns Set Report

by SuperHeroHype

‘GNT’ wrote in with this bit on the Superman Returns filming that is taking place today:

I was walking through Sydney city last night on the corner of Castlereagh st/Hunter st where they were setting up for todays Superman shoot (sat 19.11.05)

The street was lined with American yellow taxis which really stand out like nothing on earth on both sides of the road (maybe 10-15 in total), they were all the same model car except for a couple taxis which were brought in on trucks as I was walking past. Since they weren’t the same model I’d say were probably the main hero cars for any filming. There was was also a blue police car and a metropolis bus down the end.

I have some camera phone pictures of the police car and taxi.

[RACHEL STARLING – SERIES REGULAR] 18-24 years old. Rachel is a natural beauty with a radiant face and the perfectly toned body of an athlete. She has a sharp mind and a killer sense of humor. But if you look beyond her warm smile, you’ll find something haunted about her. A drowning accident as a teenager has scarred her. While enjoying a “Semester at Sea”, the boat capsized and she was stuck below deck. Although she blacked out, that last thing she remembers is being pulled free by a mysterious young boy wearing a seahorse necklace. Rachel comes from a well-heeled New York family. Her father was a successful newspaper editor but he died when she was 14. She took his death very hard and decided to embark on the “Semester at Sea” as a way of getting over her grief. Her relationship with her mother, an award winning Broadway playwright, has remained strained. Her mother is an ultra liberal and doesn’t approve of her joining the military. When she was selected to train at the Liberty Key West Naval Air Station, she achieved her dream of becoming a Top Gun, but she also has to face the fear of returning to the same area as her boating accident. Although there is a mutual attraction between Rachel and A.C., their relationship is complicated by the fact that Rachel is secretly engaged to another naval trainee, JESSE HICKS. Rachel finds herself torn between the safety and security that Jesse offers and the danger and mystery that seem to define A.C.

[JESSE HICKS – SERIES REGULAR] 18-24 years old. He’s an incredibly good-looking, Top Gun hot shot. Jesse grew up in suburban Texas and was a high school football star. His father is a decorated three star General who is currently serving in Iraq. Jesse never considered any other career; he always knew he was destined to fight for his country. He fell in love with Rachel the very first time he saw her. Defying the rules, they embarked on a passionate affair. Jesse proposed a few weeks before the pilot episode and Rachel accepted his offer. They have to keep their relationship secret or face possible expulsion from the Top Gun program. Highly ambitious and competitive, Jesse is the kind of guy who wins at any cost. He is also reckless and sometimes dangerously aggressive.

[EVA TORRES – SERIES REGULAR] 18-24 years old. A fiery Cuban beauty. Eva hasn’t exactly had an easy life. When she was six she fled Cuba with her family on a raft, which sank a hundred miles off the Florida coast in a devastating storm. She was the sole survivor. Although she was rescued she has struggled to make a life for herself in America and was bounced from foster family to foster family. It was only when she finally turned 18 that she finally felt free. She came down to the Keys for a short break and never left. She manages a local dive shop, “The Old Man and The Sea” and counts A.C. as one of her best friends. Although they are from wildly different backgrounds they both felt an instant connection.Independent, sarcastic, strong-willed, Eva isn’t afraid to express her opinion, even when no one’s asking for it.

[MCCAFFERY – SERIES REGULAR] Star Name preferred. It’s difficult to say how old McCaffery is. If you were to look at him, you’d probably guess 60ish. But you’d be way off. That’s because McCaffery is from Atlantis. Since coming to the surface world, McCaffery has led a largely reclusive life as the lighthouse keeper at Atlas Point. He has watched A.C. grow up from afar, but always knew that one day their lives would intersect. This encounter leads to a long lasting friendship. McCaffery takes A.C. under his wing and explains not only his true origin but also his destiny. He is Obi Wan to A.C.’s Luke Skywalker. He is the voice of wisdom and experience who acts as a guide and mentor to the often hotheaded A.C. McCaffery is always bailing A.C. out of trouble and is someone A.C. can turn to when it comes to all things nautical. Having grown up underwater, McCaffery knows all the myths and legends of the ocean. He’s also familiar with the creatures, both known and unknown to man, that inhabit the ocean’s dark waters. Highly intelligent and fiercely loyal, McCaffery possesses an acerbic wit and doesn’t suffer fools lightly.

[TOM CURRY – SERIES REGULAR] Late 30s to early 40s, A.C.’s stepfather. He was born and raised in Chicago but fell in love with Keys while he was a student at the University of Miami. He was an outstanding athlete and was a member of the gold medal winning US Water Polo team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He joined the Coast Guard in 1986 and has made a good career out of it, rising to the rank of Captain. While he was still a rookie Coast Guard his life took a dramatic turn. While out on a routine night patrol he came across three people bobbing in shark-infested waters — a woman, a baby and an old man. There was no sign of a boat or plane and the water was mirror still. When he got them back to land he discovered they had no ID and nowhere to go. Taking pity on them, Tom took them home. Tom quickly became enchanted with the beautiful woman, ATLANNA, and her baby son ORIN. Within a year Tom and Atlanna were married and Tom adopted her baby son as his own. They renamed the boy ARTHUR. The old man, McCAFFERY, took a job as the Atlas Point Lighthouse keeper, a position he still holds to this day. As Arthur grew up, Atlanna made Tom promise not to tell him about her connection to McCaffery. He reluctantly agreed.

UPDATE: Spider-Man 3 Composer Confirmed

by SuperHeroHype

‘Kipobe’ writes in with possible confirmation that Christopher Young will score Spider-Man 3:

It’s official. Danny Elfman will NOT be back to score Spider-Man 3 as previously reported, and it has been reported that composer Christopher Young, who completed much of the onscreen score for Spider-Man 2 will helm the project for 2007’s most anticipated film.

An official announcement is expected to be released soon, but this is coming from the same source who first revealed that Danny Elfman wouldn’t be back in the first place.

It’s also believed that there’s a chance Young will reuse alot of Elfman’s existing themes, since they are property of Sony, so for continuity sake the film will feel as much a part of the existing Spider-Man franchise as possible.

Besides Spider-Man 2, Young has quite a filmography, which you can check out here. He’s also expected to score Ghost Rider for Sony.

UPDATE: ‘Dan’ pointed us to Christopher Young’s fansite which claims it’s now official that he’ll score Spider-Man 3.

UPDATE: Michelle Rodriguez to Play Tigress?

by SuperHeroHype

In a USA Today article talking about her character on “Lost,” which includes spoilers on the show, it says Michelle Rodriguez will play Tigress:

Gripe as she might about the roles she’s offered, Hollywood continues calling. She has two horror movies in the can (BloodRayne, due Jan. 6, and The Breed, due later in 2006) and has signed a deal with Marvel Comics’ Stan Lee to develop a film version of Conan the Barbarian comic book villainess Tigress.

The villainess Tigress is a DC Comics character, however. The Marvel Comics character is Tigra, a hero and a former Avenger. It’s unclear which one the newspaper is referring to.

UPDATE: Many of you have pointed out that the above story is correct, that the character is indeed The Tigress (aka Zephra) from the Conan series, which Marvel holds the rights to. You can find out more on the character here.

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante (Hugo Weaving) known only as “V.” Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. I’ve posted some pictures taken from a recent episode of “The Fabulous Love of…” on VH1 which showed Ben Foster working out for his role in X-Men 3. Quite a few fans have been rather worried/wondering whether he has the right look for the role. I’d say some of the reactions so far have been quite positive.

The WB Makes Aquaman Official

by SuperHeroHype

The Hollywood Reporter says Smallville executive producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough are developing Aquaman for The WB:

The new project is envisioned as a contemporary reinterpretation of the DC Comics character who lives in the deep sea and enlists sharks and other oceanic creatures to help him in his crime-fighting endeavors.

The new-model Aquaman will be a man in his early twenties. As is the case on “Smallville,” which tells the story of Clark Kent’s teenage years and his coming-of-age as Superman, there won’t be any presto-chango into costumes or other superhero accessories when his superpowers are invoked, a WB Network spokesman said.

The October 20 episode of “Smallville,” titled “Aqua,” featured the Kent character encountering a mysterious young swimmer and do-gooder dubbed “A.C.,” played by Alan Ritchson.

The WB spokesman said that episode, which ranked as “Smallville’s” most-watched of the season with nearly 6.5 million viewers, was not meant to be a template for the “Aquaman” project and that “Smallville” executive producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough would search for a new actor for the lead role.

The Aquaman pilot tentatively is set to shoot early next year in Florida.

Koepp on His Version of the Spidey Sequels

by SuperHeroHype

Scooper ‘screenscribe’ tells us what David Koepp, writer of the first Spider-Man movie, said about what his sequels would have been like:

I just attended a screenwriting expo in LA and one of the speakers was David Koepp. He let us in on HIS version for the Spider-Man trilogy. He said that he had a plan to introduce Gwen Stacey in part 2 and have Harry become the second green goblin. The GG would then kill Gwen the old Marvel way by throwing her off the top of the bridge. When asked why, since that already happened to MJ in the first movie, David replied that it was planned that way… a complete circle for Spider-Man. Kind of cool to hear…
