Spider-Man 3 Principal Photography to Start

by SuperHeroHype

IESB.net talked briefly to Tristan & Isolde star James Franco about reprising his role of Harry Osborn in director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.

Although a few scenes have already been filmed, in preparation for the special effects, Franco revealed that principal photography starts next week. He also said that the cast had already done a script reading.

Franco was mum on whether or not Harry will become more villainous in the third film – he simply shrugged his shoulders and smiled.

The movie is expected to film in the New York area from May through September.

Columbia Pictures is targeting a May 4, 2007 release date for Spider-Man 3. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst are back as well, with Thomas Haden Church on board as Sandman and Topher Grace playing a mysterious role.

Superhero Movies Coming to Blu-Ray Disc and HD DVD

by SuperHeroHype

The race is on for which next-generation DVD format consumers will prefer (if they will at all, they may just stick to regular DVDs!), and studios have started announcing their first wave of titles that will be released at both the launch of Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

There’s quite a few announced titles for Blu-ray already (reportedly the leading format; Playstation 3 will also include it) with no dates yet, as the launch date hasn’t been revealed. You can check out the full list here. Some notable superhero titles are Fox’s Fantastic Four, Lionsgate’s The Punisher and Warner Bros.’ Batman Begins and Constantine (Superman Returns is expected later this year as well).

On the HD DVD side, the dates are more specific. Warner Bros. will release Batman Begins and Constantine on March 28, with Superman Returns also on the way this year.

We’ll keep you updated when more superhero titles are announced.

Pics of X-Men 3 Maquettes

by SuperHeroHype

Scooper ‘DavidKoechnerRules!’ writes:

There are new pictures of maquettes made by Sideshow Collectibles for both Juggernaut and Beast from the upcoming X3 film found at the following:

Juggernaut Maquette

Beast Maquette

They may be prototypes since Beast is …well naked. Or perhaps they’re character studies made by Spectral Motion (the makeup company). I think they look interesting and at least give an interesting perspective on translating the comic book aesthetic to film.
