Lauren Shuler Donner on Future X-Men Movies
Source:Empire
October 16, 2009

Empire magazine recently got a chance to talk to "X-Men" franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who shared some great bits about Wolverine 2, X-Men: First Class, Deadpool and Magneto. Here's a clip on the Wolverine sequel:

"That's the furthest along of all the X-Men projects on the boil. It's actually the story we wanted to use for the first Wolverine film, but [Fox head honcho] Tom Rothman preferred to set the character up with an origin story first. This movie will really focus on the relationship between Wolverine and Mariko, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord, and what happens to him in Japan. We're very fortunate to have a story mostly outlined for us [from the comic book arc co-written by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller]. And we wanted an A+ writer, so we want to Chris McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects). He came in and has tightened the story and got really immersed in the whole thing - he's in Japan in his head!"

You can read more on that sequel, plus the other three possible spin-offs, by going here!

I like what I hear, but I also liked what I heard about the first one and look what happened. I'll remain undecided on this one until I actually see it.

Get on with it then and stop pissing about. In fact, dont bother.

glad to hear they've got competent writers this time. I loved Usual suspects, and Frank miller rarely disappointments me.

Meh.
I'm sure Disney would pay a hefty sum to get these rights back.
Their pockets aren't exactly shallow.

Of all the possible X-Men movies they can make the first one they approach is another Wolverine movie?
I don't mind a sequel, but what about a different project for a change?

How about some courage for a change, for the love of God!

I think it's time for Fox to reach down their pants and check if they have balls ....

where does mickey mouse fit in with all of this?

%@$# Bruno Cruz!

I've already seen my last X-men movie by FOX. They all sucked!

Posted by: BIG WYLL on October 16, 2009 at 16:14:02

Im going to reserve judgement for after the films release.........i hope it lives up to expectation though!

I love how Batfan points out that FOX chooses to do another Wolverine movie - when the balls he should question are the ones found on WB - talk about focus on only one character - the one that is in your username. Ironic isn't it?

May "X-Men: First Class" rot in hell for all I care.

They need to make X-Men 4!

Posted by: iamthexman on October 16, 2009 at 16:23:15

what happened to xmen4!! THAT'S THE ONE THAT NEEDS TO GET GOIN!

Posted by: Tarc on October 16, 2009 at 16:25:59

Well, it was clear that Wo was not in the same timeline as the other X-Men films (Sabertooh being completely different; Scott not knowing Sabertooth; the dates of WO making Scott in his mid-40's by the time of X1, etc.). It also made a whole lot less sense on every level. Personally, I'd let WO stand on it's own and reboot Deadpool (if they are dumb enough to make that low interest film). If they do that, then Gambit - one of the best parts of WO - could then be reinserted (properly) into X4 for a kick-butt movie.

Eh, I don't expect much from this. They F&CKED up his origin story, now they're going to Japan for "Patch"? If they couldn't stay relatively consistent with a story arch that came out almost a decade ago, why would they stay consistent to one that came out 20 years ago? In Marvel's eyes Wolverine was a blockbuster, but true fans know better. Lets just say I won't be lining up for another Wolverine love story that will be taken out of context with more mutant cameos to try and keep my attention.

Disney bought Marvel for $4 billion

Posted by: Strange Hero on October 16, 2009 at 15:56:22

where does mickey mouse fit in with all of this?

Posted by: Z on October 16, 2009 at 16:44:39

I like in the interview where she says that Fox may not like some of the ideas that they come up with for Deadpool. If they dont like the ideas, DO THEM ANYWAY because that probably means its will be great.

Posted by: ohsnap on October 16, 2009 at 16:47:38

@direHahov - Wolverine WAS a blockbuster - it made over 390 million worldwide - guess somebody liked it. "true fan" or not.

my bet is your going to be the first in line when the next movie opens.

Posted by: ohsnap on October 16, 2009 at 16:49:45

correction - over 370 million...my bad...

Posted by: mojo jo-jo on October 16, 2009 at 16:51:53

has it occured to any of the previous posters that maybe, just maybe, that the companies care more about bringing in cash than making the fans happy? hell, i enjoyed all the xmen movies thus far. yes, none are "oscar worthy" but IT'S A COMIC BOOK MOVIE. jesus. be glad a movie was even made. if ya wanna cry about it then go to wal mart and buy some tissues. or just accept it, and be patient for the next movie. besides, they were supposed to be making a magneto origins movie if the wolverine movie did well originally, but time will tell if that or the deadpool movie hit first.

Posted by: mojo jo-jo on October 16, 2009 at 16:53:13

kudos to ohsnap as well.
