McKellen Says There's a Magneto Script
Source:Empire
October 13, 2009

Empire magazine talked to Ian McKellen about "X-Men" spin-off Magneto and he thinks it doesn't involve him:

"There's meant to be a Magneto script floating around, but I've not read it, so I suspect it wouldn't involve me," he said. "I think it would be about the younger Magneto, and the most I could hope for would be to top and tail that. They can't have someone whose face is as lined as mine any longer!"

He also talks briefly about Patrick Stewart's appearance in Wolverine here.

couldn't be worse than Wolverine was for sticking to the comics.

Ian McKellen is a superb actor, if the people at Fox was smart they'd find a way to use him.

Is there really a cult following for Magneto?
I think he has cool powers, but of all the heroes and villains to do a solo film on I think theres plenty of others to choose from.
He's not a hero or even an anti-hero. Hes clearly a villain. It'll be interesting to see how it all works out. Probably the birth of a villain.

If they can get a good director for the Magneto movie, I don't think it would be hard for a writer to come up with a good story about him. He and Xavier have a long and facinating history. He's the only character left from the Xmen movies that warrants his own solo film. I expect it'll be worth seeing, and it couldn't be worse than Wolverine, right?

They just need to stay away from the idiotic comparisons between Xavier/Magneto and Martin Luther King Jr./ Malcolm X. The Xavier/King comparison is apt, but man, it just makes one look so ignorant when they compare Magneto to Malcolm. I love the first Xmen movie, but it bugs me every time when they close it with him using the "by any means necessary" line.

Also, I'd be extremely surprised if Weaving didn't return for The Hobbit. What else has he got going on?

last. Why are they making this movie? seriously I mean marvel never gave this guy his own series so what makes them think people want to see this movie, just make first class a prequel or better yet reboot whit ultimate x-men

One question: Who cares about a Magneto movie after all??

Posted by: Wolverine_X on October 13, 2009 at 13:04:06

@danni

You are so right. People will get tired of these spin-offs. These movies only show the lack of ideas of the studios. And that's a shame because Marvel and DC has so muchj to offer just on main titles.
I think one day we will see an Alfred spin-off or a Blob spin-off. I mean, who cares about these movies???
It's only about money anyway and no content.

Yes, an X-Men Origins film detailing Magneto is just what we need. It would fill in the more gruesome aspects on what the holocaust was like for mutants, Sir McKellen definitely should be involved, if not as the lead then at least in a cameo. What with the supercilious CGI makeup and all.

@Johnny, I agree with the Malcolm X comparison, that isn't a purely bad interpretation, if anything it only garbs the character with more gray area - and that is never bad. Although I always thought Xavier as a Gandhi figure, hence the baldness. But as Erik would say: To each his own. When they dropped the Malcolm X allegory in X3 it made the Master of Magnetism resemble a common terrorist; there were hints of a demagogue there somewhere but it was lost to all the colourful shenanigans onscreen. I hear Singer's up for another film, and as I've suggested before, he should direct the fourth film which will catapult Erik's character as the new head of the X-team (ala Age of Apocalypse), if that's the plan then Magneto Origins would be a pivotal moment in the cinematic cannon of the character. Even a Hannibal Rising take wouldn't throw me in despair; just avoid Gavin Wood's school of directing.

Besides, Bryan Singer is 'apt' to make a holocaust victim/Nazi movie. Why NOT him?

I don't care. I would love to see a movie that focuses on just the brotherhood.

I'm tired of you comic book nerds and how you trash the Wolverine movie. It was a good movie. Ya, it didn't do the comic book panel by panel, get over it, that's not realistic, and the comic book sometimes sucks. Having a character called Psy-borg as the reason why Wolverine lost his memory? That's ridiculous. The movie involved all the requisite characters, followed the general story of the comic book, had a tight/smooth story with good acting and great action scenes.

HEY!!!!! I a comic nerd, but I don't upset like these "first" people who sit here and wait for something to pop up. I like the wolverine movie. I went in knowing it would not be like the comic, it shouldn't be. Close yes, but not line for line, and the shots to look like it was drawn.

i think this could potentially be good or bad, depending on how its played. personally, im totally against the whole cgi make up bit, where they animate mckellan's old face to look younger. Because i don't care what anyone says, ian and stewarts faces looked flat out creepy and fake as hell when X3 did it, and it looked even creepier when I saw patrick stewart with a digitized younger face. that crap didn't even look real. i could go for a magneto film, but if they try to pull that cgi makeup crap, im out.

don't get me wrong, i do think mckellan is a great actor, and i do think he should be involved in a magneto movie if there is one, but not as the starring role if its about a younger magneto. personally, i'd like to see him narrate and make a few cameos in the magneto movie as he plays an older magneto, leading up to the scene where he meets xavier in the senate, from the first x-men film. however, not to use crappy obliviously fake cgi to make him look younger. personally, i'd like to see christian bale play the younger version of magneto during the flashback sequences as Ian McKellan narrates the story. Then cast michael rosenbaum as a young xavier. hell, magneto is supposed to be older than xavier, anyway. then have the film chronicle xavier and magneto's lives together as they live through the holocaust and showing how they came to the united states. All eventually leading up to them discovering more mutants like themselves as they try to set up the school and the x-men. however, showing magneto and xavier developing different points of view as magneto grows bitter towards mankind, while xavier tries to convince him to change his mind.

if they did that, then i'll see it. however, if they use that creepy fake cgi facial crap, then im out.

Enough with the spin-offs already. What's the point in making a "younger" Magneto movie anyway? Marvel has an entire universe of characters and we're wasting money on a Magneto prequel??? It'll suck. Scratch the idea and move on to something different. Here's a thought. How about a grind house style movie featuring Luke Cage and Iron Fist with a kick-ass 70's style soundtrack???

Magneto is best x-men vilain of all time and i hope that ian mckellen will be in the magneto movies.

Posted by: lorrak7 on October 13, 2009 at 15:34:25

Magneto is a villain. He once captured the X-men and put them in chairs which reduced them to the physical level of infants as a form of mental torture. He did this as an act of revenge. A hero would not have done this.

I've never been a fan of prequels. I just don't like going backwards in a story.

Posted by: maskedavenger on October 13, 2009 at 16:10:56

@Batmanuel - can't the same be said for almost ALL comic book movies?
Last I remember Nolan changed quite a bit for his version of Batman -why not Wolverine?

Posted by: maskedavenger on October 13, 2009 at 16:13:45

@lorrak7 - actually Magneto joined the xmen for a run also - being a hero.

I think Singer could work his magic with this script and turn it in't a great dark yet thought provoking film.
But I wouldn't want to see Havok or Avalanche in it. Keep them for X4.
Having Mystique in it though? Brilliant idea.

Posted by: fullmetal777 on October 13, 2009 at 16:26:23

all you people that want every movie to be like the dark knight are idiots, what do you think film makers are robots?! people have their own vision and imaginations, they don't have to follow any standard! of course you internet jerk offs with no life will never understand because you never go outside!

Posted by: COLE8.7 on October 13, 2009 at 16:52:15

Yay! There's a Magneto script! Now all they need is some demand for a Magneto movie...Wolvie didn't exactly blow up the box office and he's just a tad more popular than Mags...I say "X4:Days of Future Past" or NO MORE X AT ALL!

Posted by: lloyd on October 13, 2009 at 17:14:13

RUTGER HAUER as MAGNETO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: COOMS on October 13, 2009 at 18:44:22

Magneto is a villain. But he's an interesting one. He's trying to do what's best for his kind but he's going about it in the violent and hateful ways imaginable, making him no better than a Nazi himself.

This could make for an interesting film. Xavier and Erik are originally on the same side of the fence but gradually Erik loses his faith in humanity's compassion. Put him in some kind of ethical situation that would end in him choosing the path of an extremist.

The only problem is how will this tie in to the beginning of X3? It was what...20 years before the first film? Magneto and Xavier were still friends, recruiting mutants together for the school. If the whole film revolves around a young Magneto acting as a villain for more than half of the movie it contradicts this bit. It would be best to justify why Magneto decided to tap into his hatred later on in life, as opposed to being murderous, tyrannical, etc. at a young age.

yes kirsten dunst sucks, you right about TDK

Ian McKellen was awesome as Magneto n' gave the x-men movie proper theatrics as for a younger magneto- i'm all for that as long as they involve his kids quicksilver & Scarlett Witch. N' someone please make a Runaway movie- please i've been dying for that.
