Deadpool Will Break the Fourth Wall
July 5, 2009
Empire chatted with Ryan Reynolds and asked him an interesting question about the upcoming "X-Men" spin-off, Deadpool, in which he'll reprise his role from the "Wolverine" movie.
Reynolds says Deadpool will breach the fourth wall: "Break the fourth wall? Oh yeah, he's got to. I want to see him break the Great Wall"... "The studio's working on a script and trying to find a director. The main goal is to make sure it stays close to the source material."
A release date has not yet been set for the film.

Awesome. you know, it sounds like Reynolds should just buckle down and write the damn thing himself (with guidance from a comic book writer). It seems like he really wants good things for this character. I just hope he has enough sway to tell the execs to take their bad "creative" suggestions away from the table.

Guy Richie to direct!

Hmmm. It will be interesting to see how they do it. If they have him address an entire audience, it won't work well for someone watching by themselves. There are a lot of movies that have broken the fourth wall, but they address a theater audience, so it's odd when watching at home.

stay t the source materiel? so by casting a ****ty actor who forces humor and butchering the character in Wolverine is close? i fear this **** film!

@Armin s
How did Reynolds butcher the character in Wolverine? He seemed to do a good job of a smartass wade wilson to me. And you can't blame him for how the character was handled, that's not his responsibility as an actor. And I believe he's supposed to be kinda sane before all of the scarring.
So, what did he do wrong?

I hope the powers that be at Fox adopt the same philosophies that Reynolds seems to have. I would love an R rated film but I don't think that will happen which is sad. However, one should note that most of the Deadpool comics would pass for PG-13 so I don't see why a PG-13 wouldn't work.

Sounds cool. But my question is this: who will want to go see this movie other than the diehard fans? Hope they treat Deadpool better in his flick than in X-Men Origins.

How can you make a rated R movie out of a comic book character that kids of any age can buy? You guys are ridiculous.

If not over done and w/ the right timing... this could be extremely hilarious.

So they want this to be close to the material? By giving him eye beams and ninja swords that retract into his body? Good Job Nu Marvel

When did Deadpool start breaking the fourth wall? Was it after Joe Kelly "killed" him and Christopher Priest came on as a writer and had Wade composed of living snot in a tube? That is the only time I know of but admittedly i don't read Cable/Deadpool. Is breaking the fourth wall something he does often? I'm a huge fan of Deadpool, but I was a fan of Joe Kelley's Deadpool and the Deadpool before Christopher Priest such as the Circle Chase type stuff. I'm not a fan of Deadpool breaking the fourth wall in the movie. Especially some of the stuff that some other people on here saying that they want to see. I don't want a campy Mel Brooks or Monty Python scene where he is running into camera equipment/goes off camera to read the script/or has an entire monologue aimed toward the audience. These are all things other fans have proposed. I want as much humor and action as the next guy/gal but I think it would be going too far to break that wall. While I think it is a ridiculous notion to do it in the comics like everyone says he does. I guess I'm just annoyed that people act like fourth wall breaking is all there is to his character.

Yeah they better make sure they stick to the source material.FOX sucks

@deadfish
The times I've seen him break the fourth wall in the comics were in the Wolverine Origins series. And I thought it was done really well.
He doesn't have full conversations, he just makes little quips to the people watching, which to him are the people in his head. So he won't be talking to a movie audience, he'll be talking to himself, if that makes sense.
What I would really like to see though, is right in the middle of an action sequence before he's about to get hit in the face he calls a time out. Or it just freezes. And then he walks in front of the frozen image (with him still in it) and then he addresses the audience and talks about what's about to happen.
Here's the best ****ogy I can come up with: Wile E Coyote on acid. Quick little quips (like his signs) with a lot more violence and insanity.

Ryan Reynolds looks great as Deadpool I need to see Wolverine: XMEN Origins before even thinking about watching the Deadpool spinoff. Ryan if you can't get any writers to write your blockbuster spinoff masterpiece you should write it yourself because you are a great actor and would be a good writer and producer.

I'm all for Weapon XI being a Deadpool clone. It would be funny if their first attempt produced Widdle Wade.

With Ryan Reynolds comedic timing this is a role he was born to play. He is the perfect choice. Can't wait to see it.

It'll be a great ending if during the credits we hear him going over the cast "Hey! That's me!"

Don't screw up the character this time. I don't know what the studios want. To make movies related to characters or to make shi** movies that ruin the characters all along and that can make only money. The Hugh Jackman movie on Wolverine was TERRIBLE. Nothing to do with his real Origin. I wonder even how could Hugh done a movie like that. He should have stayed with the Australia movie. The only thing i liked was Sabretooth by Liev Shreiber. The rest nothing to do with the real origins of Wolverine. Maybe now we can see the Professor that made the Weapon X program and forget Stryker.

yea, an R-rated film doesn't seem likely to me. Marvel didn't do well with Blade and The Punisher, so they might just limit their source material to PG-13 to widen their audience. If they make a big budget film with great effects, they need to have that restriction to make back their profit. If you want an R-rated film, then they'll probably just spend $25 million and give you a low budget B-type flick of a comic book character you really like.
The only way they can make a really good R-rated Deadpool is if they follow in the exact footsteps and promotion and film making style of what Zack Snyder did with 300 and what The Wachowski Bros. did with The original Matrix.
