20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine kicked-off the summer box office season with a huge opening day of $35 million from 4,099 theaters, including about $5 million from midnight screenings. Among the "X-Men" films, the prequel ranks second behind X-Men: The Last Stand, which grossed $45.1 million on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend of 2006.

One can project that the Wolverine origin story will end up making somewhere between $84 to 86 million in its opening three-day weekend. Last May, Iron Man earned $38.7 million its first day to go on to gross $102.1 million its first weekend.

Check back tomorrow for the official studio estimates.

Posted by: Josh on May 2, 2009 at 17:31:36

I Don't know why people didn't like it. I think the movie is 7/10 or an 8/10.
If you like cool fight scenes with superpowers and kick ass action then you'll love this movie.

This proves the world is full of idiots.

"but it just became marvels superman returns lol "

That's funny, because Superman Returns WAS a good movie.

You all are morons aparently you havent read origins or are even remotly a xmen fan the movie was a really close (not perfict but it is hollywood)rendition. the movie was well put together. to many went in looking for dark knight. which in my opintion BALE SUCKS. he sounds like clint eastwood trying to push a crap out. True fans know this movie was great. oh and as far as it being comepared to superman returns hey idiot all i got is 2 words for ya SUPER BOY lol returns was WAY worse then even the first hulk.

Posted by: matt p on May 2, 2009 at 17:39:44

how was superman returns a good movie??! it was terrible. did that alien homo even throw a punch in the movie??

someone up above said that if you like superpowers and sweet action then you'll like this... couldn't agree more.

I do however hate what they did to Deadpool but the beginning with him was AMAZING. Ryan Reynolds is the perfect wade wilson. His little fight scene in the beginning was great and the opening scenes going through the wars was really awesome too. the beginning of the movie rocked. i'd recommend it

I actually thought the first 2/3 of the movie was actually very interesting and the last bit was rushed. I have noticed the same thing with X-3 and both F4 movies.
Since all these movies follow a similar "formula", don't think the director is to blame for this film. I think it kind of shows that the studios are a little too involved and out of touch.
When the final numbers come back, and they are weak, Fox will not admit to making a bad movie, they will blame it on being a good movie that was leaked and people were watching for free.
Final opinion: I hope is falls under projected sales, Marvel Studios buys the rights back and we finally get some "real" X-Men movies.

EXCELLENT FILM!!! LOOKING FORWARD TO A SEQUEL!!!

HUGH JACKMAN ONCE AGAIN ROCKED AS WOLVERINE. If Wolverine is perfectly played in a movie called X-Men Origins: WOLVERINE, then I can't see why this movie is not good. Besides, that's exactly what the 95% of the critics said, that Hugh Jackman did a GREAT job. Is anyone doubting about that? Go straight away at rotten tomatoes and find out yourselves. As for me, I'm definetely going to watch it once more... I hope it will be a big box-office hit. I'm a full supporter of Jackman! He always nails it as my favorite comic-book hero...

Air Force One is clearly an "Air Head" or just a regular Fox plant trying to put frills on a pig

I knew this movie would be a stinker when I read that Jackman and Co. were doing reshoots. Then the sudden explanation given for the reshoots that 'no, no, everything's ok' confirmed that it sucked.

Posted by: superbumm on May 2, 2009 at 17:58:42

for a movie i thought it was good. i was upset at the fact that they didnt go any farther with the weapon x program, they could have done some cool stuff with that in 5 to 10 min. but again, for a movie i thought it was at least a 7 1/2 out of 10.

Posted by: The Shaper of Worlds on May 2, 2009 at 18:04:23

Oh btw for sall who said this movie was great.....I say plant and keep away from the NASDAQ and brushing your own teeth - get a second opinion or reconnect your brain lol This was a Fox S@@t fest to line up yo such classics as FF FF2 , Daredevil X3 and last and least Elektra, Queen of Suckonia!!! Marvel get these rights back please

Posted by: wedge on May 2, 2009 at 18:05:22

Conflicted. I want it to succeed so I can get a Deadpool movie, but I don't like people supporting sub-par films.

Posted by: Ares on May 2, 2009 at 18:05:30

Josh, you said:

"If you like cool fight scenes with superpowers and kick ass action then you'll love this movie."

That may be true, but as The Dark Knight, Watchmen, the first 2 Spider-Man, X-Men and Blade movies proved, if you don't care about the characters on the screen or the world they inhabit then all the greatest action scenes in the world will be meaningless.

A superhero movie cannot exist on kick ass action scenes alone... If you need proof, watch The Punisher: War Zone, either of the 2 Fantastic Four movies, or (most recently) The Spirit.

regardless what happens with this frachise please keep hugh as the lead rold... he IS wolverine

Posted by: JohnyB on May 2, 2009 at 18:14:59

THE MOVIE WAS ****IN GOOD

Posted by: Starlight on May 2, 2009 at 18:23:10

It was OK, but I think I was expecting something better. I was surprised as a few FX looked really BAD.

Posted by: Shayera on May 2, 2009 at 18:23:12

I pretty much agree with Roger Ebert's review. He nailed the point in that it's hard to really care about a person who is indestructible and feels nothing but anger throughout the movie. But then, I've never been a Wolverine fan. I hope it sinks after this weekend.
