Goyer Says Magneto Will Have to Wait
Source:Superhero Hype!
December 12, 2008
Superhero Hype! got a chance to talk to David Goyer (The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, "Blade" films) on Thursday and learned from the filmmaker that the Magneto spin-off is in a holding pattern at the moment.
"I think they like the script and they're just waiting to see what happens with 'Wolverine,'" Goyer told us. "I don't think they would consider moving forward until the movie comes out."
Magneto will give us a look at the early life of Eric Lensherr and his friendship with Charles Xavier.
While we didn't learn anything new about a follow-up to The Dark Knight, Goyer did express his continued amazement at the film's success.
"If there was anything going on with the new Batman movie, I wouldn't tell you." [laughs] "'The Dark Knight'... the DVD just came out and did insane, again, and Heath just got a Golden Globe nomination and I think it's going to get some Academy Award nominations. And not just for Heath and not just for technical. I hope Chris gets a nomination. You look at it and it's actually one of the best reviewed films of the year. I think it would be cool to see a comic book movie make some headway in the Academy."

I have only one thing to say about this. In the words of Deiter from Sprockets: "I'm as happy as a little girl.."

I think this whole concept would be fantastic. . .if it wasn't with a villian, or should I say just a villian. I heard that they're going to have xavier in it and that's great, but they're not exactly headliners in their own comics (X-related titles are typically teams, not just featuring charles). If they had a more up front character that alot of main stream ppl knew, or vaguely knew of, it would work ALOT better. Think of this concept for an example only, a Spider-man/Black Cat movie in the vein of a Mr and Mrs Smith type movie, where they're shown "together, but not really together". That would be more interesting than this.

Bring on a Best film for Dk! ANd honestly I doubt Magneto would make much if it came out anyway. Wolverine is the reason people go to see X-men, not Magneto. The series did great, but people were not throwing down money for Magneto. And they wouldn't pay money to see a movie all about him.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MAGNETO!!!!
Posted by: Wildsyde7 on December 12, 2008 at 02:33:21
Although, if they made it a real drama, similar to the tone of say shawshank redemption with the backdrop being a through the years piece like forrest gump, showing him happy as a child, then the concentration camps and his transformation with the mutant power he discovers, his release and how he decides to deal with life, humans and charles. Could be interesting, doubt it would make the movie X-Men or Wolverine would make, but it would be a real story versus blow'em up action movies. Dark Knight showed the world that you can make a serious movie with the guise of a comicbook, and get you involved no matter if your a hardcore fan or new to the whole concept.

Magneto, Deadpool, X-Men:First Class and Wolverine II if it gets anywhere near Iron Man numbers.
Maybe X-Men:First Class if it bombs.

is anyone really surprised? everything FOX plans to do with their comic properties depends on wolverine. Including FF3(which I doubt anyone wants after the first 2), Silver Surfer, and Probably the future of X-men.... why don't they just make their marvel properties into TV shows. X-men would be a great show. I'd love to see the marvel universe in TV series form they could do so much more story telling in one season than most 2-3 hour movies do and be able to use more than 1 villain. imagine if we had a spider-man show, an X-men show+spin-off x-shows(the curret X-factor would be an awesome show), an avengers show, and an FF show. even if these were animated series it would be better than what we have for marvel movies story telling wise. but studios are about instant gratification they'd rather have a movie make 100 million after spending 30 million to make make it instead of spending what it takes for a tv show. the entire cast of friends got paid 1 million dollars each per an episode for their last season. I don't think fox has NBC money to throw around like that but come on prsonbreak, fringe, and terminator, and bones(which i've watched to many times just cause i like angel) those shows aren't very good. I'm sure Joss Whedon would do an X-men show except for the fact that fox screwed him over. FOX has really bad shows on tv with the exception of house. but Heroes and Smallville are more watched than those and those shows are garbage.I know we all were excited when they first premiered but thats cause we want superhero tv shows and smallville is the closest we'll get sadly. i might have started rambling a little but I just want to see cyclops be the leader of the x-men once... I mean he can't even be the leader in the new cartoon. Scott Summers got shafted, Marry Jane, Gwen Stacy, and Eddie Brock/Venom got shafted, the green goblin's Costume got shafted, half of the mutants that they used as minor characters in the X-movies got shafted, matt murdck and everyone in DD got shafted, the punisher's been shafted since the 80's, 616 Nick Fury got shafted,Galactus got shafted, and Dr. Doom one of the coolest ever villains got shafted. by shafted i mean they were nothing like the comics.

Good news on the script for Magneto. And I'm with Goyer, I'm looking to see some TDK Oscar success!

I really don't care about the Magneto spin off, they should do X4 or a Gambit spin off!

Academy Award, best picture, The Dark Knight.

Blade Trinity should disqualify Goyer from being involved in a comic property that doesn't also have a Nolan in the mix. CERTAINLY not in a directing capacity. That movie was a franchsie killer.

The trailer for Wolverine was actually pretty decent. I saw it after going to check out "The Day the Earth Stood Still". I'm sure the trailer will be online soon.

a prequel would would be X-celent.
maybe even rebot the serier beacuse lets face it they screwed up a lot of characters, e.g. Cyclops, Beast, Rogue, even Professor X hardly done anything in the whole series except wait to be saved.
i didnt see the point of intoducing new characters in X3 just to kill them off or give them hardly any screen time like Angel.
anyway i cant wait to see Wolverine and i think people should lay off Liev Schreiber until we see the proper trailer and then make an informed judgement

Lame. Don't make a Magneto movie.
Dark Knight was Lame.

Goyer's a hack. He's a wannabe Michael Crichton except without the discipline to do >>real>entirely

can't wait hope wolverine movie does great, and magneto and first class come soon after magneto needs APOCALYPSE in it to fight charles and eric and it needs to show them start the school other interesting characters are chamber, prosimian, and mammomax.for first class they need more beak, glob herman, and gambit, sentinels, husk, and sinister. can't wait to see what kind of story they do and what cool cameos are in the movie after all this bring on x-men 4

I would not get my hopes too high David Goyer.
Hollywood is too fickle and childish to give due credit to a "superhero" movie. TDK is the best movie of the year and one of the best of all time. I'm sure the Golden Globes would not recognize Heath Ledger if he was still alive either. Remember when everyone was ranting and raving about Jack Nicholson's performance as The Joker in the original Batman? Well, He got a big fat zero nomination from the stuck-up Academy to everyone's surprise.

I do not want to see a freaking magneto movie. I think they need to start from scratch with the whole x-men series in another ten years anyway. the first two were decent, but the third was as unwatchable as spider-man 3, and this wolverine movie looks like they are going to get it wrong, too. sorry to say it. I think Hugh Jackman was a great wolverine, but the makeup dept. didn't even ATTEMPT to create a look for sabretooth. Liev looks like james hetfield with a shaved head. and gambit??? just a way to kiss up to the cartoon fans (unfortunately, the mainstream). i'm just hoping that if marvel makes more of these "marvel knights" movies like the punisher, they re-vamp daredevil, too.

So it pretty much means that the studio is having its doubts about the Wolverine movie and they don't want to waste their time or money on Magneto when/if Wolverine bombs.

This was a stupid idea anyways...up there with the Elektra spinoff. I'm all for comic book movies but this wouldn't be a strong draw for me as opposed to Wolverine.

The reason why David Goyer who directed and wrote Blade Trinity..made Blade 3 look so bad is that besides directing and writing Blade 3 he was also working on the script for Batman Begins and that was a bad mix cause he was not focused on Blade Trinity..rather just putting something together then they let him direct that garbage and without any objectivity and clases with Wesley Snipes who did not like the way the movie was going the whole movie ended up being subpar.
