Producer Lauren Shuler Donner Teases Wolverine... and Deadpool?
Source:Scott Huver
October 8, 2008
The secrets behind the origins of Marvel Comics' most popular mutant Wolverine remained murky and mysterious in the comic books for decades, and the filmmakers behind X-Men Origins: Wolverine have also been working furiously to keep the curtain drawn on Logan's cinematic beginnings before the movie bows next May.
But ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! had a red carpet encounter with the film's producer, Lauren Shuler Donner (who also oversaw the "X-Men" films as well as a diverse assortment of features, from Pretty in Pink to Free Willy to You've Got Mail to the upcoming The Secret Life of Bees), and with a minor pop of the claws in her direction she gave up a few details on Logan's first solo outing on the big screen – and a possible spin-off for the "Merc with a Mouth," Deadpool.
CS/SHH!: What's the latest you can tell us about "Wolverine"?
Lauren Schuler Donner: May 1st, 2009! I guess it's closer to the first "X-Men" in tone because it's a little darker, but there's a lot of action. It's his origin story. It's really good. I've been in the editing room the last couple of weeks and I think that it's good and that audiences are going to like it. But it's a little darker.
CS/SHH!: How is Hugh Jackman's interpretation of the character different or new, compared to what we've seen in the "X-Men" films?
Schuler Donner: Well, you haven't seen this side of him. It's darker and sadder and it's kick-ass. There's a ton of action. It's really kick-ass.
CS/SHH!: How was working with Gavin Hood as the director?
Schuler Donner: It was fun. It was good. I like taking someone out of the indie world and bringing someone into the action world because it grounds the movie. It gives it a reality. It gives it an emotional core, and then you can have as much fun and action in it as you want.
CS/SHH!: This was Gavin's first time playing with really big cinematic toys. Was there a learning curve on that for him?
Schuler Donner: Yeah. He had a learning curve, but the thing basically for the director, honestly, it's sort of like, "Here's what I want..." and then the visual FX guys create that. Then it's like, "No. I want it more like this or like that." A director doesn't have to know how to do it. They have to know about lighting and shooting someone against green screen and that sort of stuff, but in terms of actually creating it, we do that.
CS/SHH!: And Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool.
Schuler Donner: Yes. Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool... he plays Wade Wilson.
CS/SHH!: Is that in hopes of a "Deadpool" spin-off film?
Schuler Donner: I hope so. I really hope so. He's so good at it.
CS/SHH!: Are there any comic book storylines in particular that the movie is drawing from?
Schuler Donner: There's an "X-Men: Origins" that some of it is pulled from, and then it's sort of an amalgamation of some of them. But "X-Men: Origins" sort of goes back into his young, young past, and we started there. [Note: Schuler Donner is referring to the 2001 Origin miniseries by Bill Jemas, Joe Quesada, Paul Jenkins, Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove].
CS/SHH!: And is the Stan Lee cameo obligatory at this point, even though he didn't personally create Wolverine?
Schuler Donner: Well, we shot in Australia, and so we don't have a Stan.
CS/SHH!: Oh no... Maybe he can get placed in the background digitally?
Schuler Donner: Yeah, I know. Oh, you know what, we're doing some additional shooting in January and that's a good idea. I love Stan!
CS/SHH!: And on a personal note... you're about to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?
Schuler Donner: Yes, I am. I'm so excited.
CS/SHH!: What's it like getting THAT phone call?
Schuler Donner: I was literally jumping up and down. I'm from Ohio and who gets a star, really?
CS/SHH!: You expect people in your movies to get them, but...
Schuler Donner: Oh, of course. I went to Halle Berry's and that was cool, but me? It's great. And my husband ["Superman" director Richard Donner] is getting one and they're going to be next to each other. It's so great. I'm so excited.

I REALLLLY hope that Deadpool gets his own movie out of this. Even if I have to sit through Wolverine 4...it would be worth it...(hopefully)

But the real question is, are they going to try and make the real fans happy and make it R? Probably not.

I wonder if the part where she said he's Wade Wilson means he won't be wearing the Deadpool suit in the Wolverine movie.
Posted by: Gambit on October 8, 2008 at 00:11:56
FORGET DEADPOOL FFS! Have Gambit, gambit is such a beter charcter than Deadpool! Jesus Christ where was ****ing Deadpool in the ****ing x-men, seriously! GAMBIT, and don't bother with a Gambit stand alone if his eyes are not going to black and red, just forget it! MORE GAMBIT!

I dont think this movie is going to make the fans happy, I mean, since Marvel isn't doing it cannot have a Captain America or Hulk cameo. Doesnt need to be R to be a good film.
Sorry about the spelling

This doesnt convince me this movie is gonna good even I love Wolverine. I know Im bitter about this stuff but after the X-men movies how can I have my hopes up. The footage at the comic-con still looked like an x-men 3 remixed trailer. Good luck to the cast though. Big props to Ryan Reynolds. thumbs down to FOX for messing up Wolverine's Origin for the fourth time in a row.

FINALLY!
I've been waiting 17 years for a DP movie.
And why in the world would we make a Gambit movie? OOH he's dark and mysterious. Ooohh he's an anti-hero, too cool to follow the rules. Please, they already made a Wolverine movie. Don't gimme another of these crap films. Gambit is a lame, second string character who faded off the map once the 90's died.
Lets see Wade take center stage.

Keith, wtf? Since when was Wolverine on the MAX line ever -- Clearly you can't tell the difference between Punisher MAX and Wolverine

I would really like to see MadCap make an appearence some time soon, although I doubt it will ever happen. He's Deadpools neminis, but Deadpool doesn't know it. lol

So, they're taking stuff from ORIGIN. Am I the only one who thought that miniseries totally sucked?!?

OMG!! All you haters....Just watch the movie and enjoy it (or not). Quit your complaining. Just be happy that something is being made. I'm totally psyched about it...But that's just me.

So i think gambit is a poon and deadpool rocks. But it seems with teh past that cap and wolverine have, i wonder if they will even mention one in another in either movie. they better, at least say "well on our last mission with rogers" or remember that mission with *Howlett* just something to let us know the universe is still tied together, even though the film companies are not.

Finally, my favorite Marvel Character of all time will make an appearance on the big screen! Seriously its about time. There is more than enough in the comics to pull for a full trilogy (although I think a Deadpool movie would end up being a stand alone film) And Ryan Reynolds is perfect for the character. His wit and delivery of sarcastic one liners, he IS Wade Wilson. With his star power, that would be enough to bring people to the theaters. The only problem I can think of is that the character and the storylines are so dark, the movie would have to be rated R. Hopefully the Punisher will pull in enough dough to show the studios that an R rated hero flick can make the green.
Wolverine rocks, and this flick looks kick ass but Deadpool will not make it to the big screen soon enough for me!!!

PG-13 or R...I hope they just give us a great movie. Wolverine had one of the most complicated and fun origins that this should be a fun ride, if done right.
I saw the trailer from SDCC and it was great. It had Deadpool and Gambit in it. I really hope he goes feral and gets down & dirty against who ever he faces.

TromaFreak64 I said nothing about MAX. You did. You don't have to be in the MAX line to be violent and I just can't see the Wolverine so many have grown to know and love being in his own in a PG-13 movie. When is the last time you have read a Wolverine book that showed him cut lose and be Wolverine while working as a PG-13 movie? I've seen enough of the Wolverine the X-Men team. I want to see Wolverine being the best at what he does and what he does AIN'T Pg-13.

If you saw the bootleg footage from (ComicCon? I apologize, I forget what it was shown at) before they pulled it from the net, you see ONE small clip of Deadpool, and it's Ryan Reynolds spinning two (I assume swords) and its him, but he is wearing a red A-shirt and has something else on...it was still B.A. even if he doesn't go full Deadpool, he would be great in a standalone movie...and I personally can't wait for this! Wolverine, Liev Schrieber, Gambit, Deadpool! What an awesome summer flick!

so i'm guessing that u guys all missed the whole "more like the first movie" part.
i still consider the first 2 x men to be great movies, despite the 3rd one. I think she would know, if anyone, where the movie's headed. If she says X-men 1, she knows what she's talking about.
And we're all pulling for Van Wilder to get a clean slate as Deadpool. here's hoping man.

Ha. I made it on the first page before the 300 other X MEN Fanatics spill there guts on how great this movie will be. WRONG! The X MEN franchise died with the first movie and was sledgehammered into the grave with the second movie. Sorry, but even if they pull a rabbit from Horrywoods bag of tricks, this movie is going to be rental city for a lot of fans who have been disappointed by the way the mutants have been played on screen. I wish them luck with this movie, they are going to need it.

If 20th Fox dumbs this down to a PG-13, I will not watch it.
'Nuff said.

i would feel better if she actually knew the name of the origin comic she was referencing! jesus christ hollywood folk crack me up. well, i'm giving it a chance, i love all parties involved, though i hate to hear that the studio gave hood a hard time. the man is a great at what he does, just let him do his thing.
i truly hope they didn't creat a 'new' origin for logan. it was perfect in the comics, and would translate beautifully to the screen. i just don't undertsand why they feel the need to fix things that aren't broken. yes - sometimes in adapting,a change is necessary, but with wolverines origins that is not the case! hopefully they didn't decide to take unnecessary/assinine liberties.
