Source:MTV
February 21, 2009

MTV's quarterly program "Spoilers" aired a new clip from Watchmen that you can check out below. It features Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson) putting down a riot at the prison the only way they know how. Opening in conventional and IMAX theaters on March 6th, the graphic novel adaptation was directed by Zack Snyder (300).

Don't remember a prison riot in the graphic novel...

Posted by: john turningpin on February 22, 2009 at 01:04:09

Oops, now I do...

Sweet.

yeah, there was...the only thing that was different in this clip was the fact that Nite Owl II didn't use the sonic scream on his ship.

BTW...

can we stop calling it a graphic novel please! it was a 12 issue mini-series, that they put into a trade paperback. no matter what way you look at it, it's a freaking comic book!

It wasn't really a riot in the novel. I hope they show those guys trying to get at rorschach.

Wow, no one said "first". I'm seeing this movie. No 40 year old virgin nerds are paying attention to it. I assume JonDABomb is still a virgin though, he wrote something completely stupid. Call him if you have star wars collectibles and wanna make big bucks off them.

I'm not a 40-year-old virgin nerd. I've read the graphic NOVEL at least a dozen times. I've actually sat down and talked about it with Alan Moore. And I'm sorry, but JohnDABomb pretty much summed up this clip and this movie.

Meh.

That was not compelling action. I thought we were done with the tired, matrix-style fight scenes in movies now? I hope the other action scenes will be better.

there's like 40min of this thing in all these clips i feel like ive seen it now!

Zack Snyder needs to go back and learn cinematography. NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE IN SLOW-MO!....that is all. Soundtrack worked for 300 not for Watchmen, of what Ive heard so far.

Agreed with iactuallyreadwatchmen

@40yr old virgin
I hope you're not expecting an action movie. I'm not.

what happened to the blood and brutality that was the novel?

Posted by: TPJR on February 22, 2009 at 01:46:53

That's an awesome clip! But I think they're starting to show too much, the movies' still 2 weeks away...

Still, don't get me wrong, I'm happy to have seen it.

OMG I never wanted that clip to end!

Any one else a little annoyed with all the slow-motion effects used in the fight? The Nite-owl kick one was okay but what is up with Zack Snyder and all that slow motion? Sorry if I'm *****ing to much, I usually hate people that do that too.

There wasn't a riot in the book--they go to the prison for the express purpose of breaking rorscach. I'm guessing that the motivation in the film will be to quell a prison riot that starts after something rorshach does, perhaps killing the little guy mob boss. It's most likely an attempt to make nite owl and ss a bit more super-hero-y instead of having them break rorscach unprovoked, hurting prison guards instead of, as in this clip, crazed zombie-esque prisoners. I understand the motivation, and though I don't know how it will play, I think it might be needlessly different simply to inject a greater action beat.

The thing that strikes me an innefective about this clip is that nite owl looks and acts far more like a batman clone than he is supposed to, in my opinion--and both of them fight as if they were trained by ninja or something. These people are, in the book, polished brawlers at best, who don't use flashy spin moves and jump kicks but hard and fast finishing moves to cripple or kill. In short, there's a lot of shiny movie-ness to this clip that may or may not play well. We'll see!

I know I'll be seeing this thing, and we in the comic community are going to be discussing it for a long while!! Should be fun!

Slow mo action....so, Frackin get over yourselves..you sound like a bunch of little girls!

Everything i see gets me more excited for this movie! If it is anywhere near accurate to the comic i will be happy beyond belief. I love Watchmen and have been lookign forward to March 6 since i heard about the movie.

This is Spar..I mean Watchmen.

As a weird person who cannot see what is happening in these fat movie scenes, I applaud Snyders use of slo-mo in these parts. I for one cannot keep up with whether a certain person is punching another person.

Thank **** for Snyder keeping us slow reflexed people in mind.

:( wow that looked like crap. and of course the prisoners attack one at a time. this was a bit of a downer but the movie will still be awsome. clips havent been too impressive though.

Posted by: vanceastro on February 22, 2009 at 03:53:38

I think it fits. I mean, you read the comic in slow-mo, your eyes stare at the action scenes... Much better to slow it down and show what's happening, unlike the Batman films where it cuts away before the punches connect.
Watchmen isn't a typical action story anyway. The graphic novel has very little compared to the lengthy dialogue.

Posted by: Michael on February 22, 2009 at 05:18:10

I wonder how long 300, and now Watchmen, would be if they didnt use so much slow motion? Just because its a comic book adaptation doesn't mean they should slow it down for the comic book feel. Thats the dumbest statement ever. Picture watching No Country For Old Men and every shot is a f****** freeze frame and the reason is "its based off a novel." oh yeah and unlike the new batman films... watchmen won't be good.

Well... they deleted JohnDABomb's comment, making my comment meaningless.

OK. Put it another way: This is a clip of a film by a man who thought that a thrash-metal cover of Bob Dylan's epic beat poetry masterpiece "Desolation Row" by My Chemical Romance was a really good idea for the closing credits.

This is a film of "Watchmen" by a man who told MTV the book was nihilistic. (Which, as another critic said years ago, is like saying St. Augustine is in favor of debauchery because he says he embraced it before he realized it was wrong.)

This is "Watchmen" by a guy who has said in multiple interviews the books asks (doesn't answer as its premise - ASKS) whether being a superhero makes someone a psycho or a recluse or detached from humanity. And doesn't see that's like saying, "'Watership Down' asks what it means to be a rabbit." Because, hey, we're all really likely to become either rabbits or superheroes soon, and so we all REALLY NEED to know what it means to be a superhero or a rabbit.

JohnDABomb's comment was this:

"FART!!!!!!"

As I said before, he pretty much summed it up.
