Bay's Giant Robot Sequel Blows Up the Box Office!
June 28, 2009
Going into the weekend, there was no doubt Michael Bay's anticipated sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, would be huge, though few thought it could open as big as last summer's biggest blockbuster, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, at least not based on the awful reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
After grossing just over $60 million on Wednesday (a record for the weekday opening) and another $29 million on Thursday, the sequel brought in an estimated $112 million over the weekend for a total of $201.2 million in its first five days.
Besides setting a record for a June opening, surpassing 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Bay's latest grossed the second-largest amount over a five-day period after The Dark Knight's $203.8 million. The IMAX Corporation reports that the movie had the best five-day gross, grossing $14.4 million in its first five days on 169 IMAX screens, nearly double what the 5th "Harry Potter" movie did two years ago.
"Revenge of the Fallen" became the third-largest worldwide opening weekend grosser, earning $274 million and beating out last summer's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The film has become Paramount's biggest international opener of all time, again besting "Indy 4" for the top honor, and ranking as the industry's fourth-biggest opening of all time abroad. The sequel has taken in $387 million worldwide to date.

Not bad for a two hour toy commercial.
I'm awfully tired of every summer movie that comes out breaking records. Every big movie so far has broken a record of some kind.

The movie is just OKAY! Great action, but of course, weak story. I'm surprised that it got that close to TDK. I say sales will drop drastically by next weekend.

Heh, so true, SexyGeek, so true. I don't know about it having any *real* qualities in terms of a "good movie" by technical definition, but it was undoubtedly entertaining.

Hmmm. Interesting, I liked the movie, but typing on Forums are stronger than expressions. I on the other hand thought that Bay gave too much to the people that whined about not enough action and so he gave it to them. Then he also tried the story line which is pretty much told at the beginning that they are fighting Decepticons since last movie. Please if you post make sure you are not posting the movie sucks...after all it was a toyline! Oh, for the people and the "Racist Professor" or the professional who said this movie was racist....get over it watch movie's like "Crash" not everybody is racist! In other words stop pointing out stupid **** to become someone! I am not a Racist I did take my 5 yr old daughter who is half Mexican and Indian...(oh I am not Black!) to see this movie...and we had fun! Enjoy your last days on this planet and have fun! Everyone has a time.

Who cares what it makes. Still crap, and the fact that it is makes people want to go see just how crappy it is, so of course it's making money now, but by the time GI Joe or Harry Potter comes out it'll be a distant memory.

wow, it came in just 2.6 million short of the dark knight without anybody from the cast even dying to give it free publicity? Not bad. It may pass the dark knight in the overall BO too.

It was an awesome Summer Blockbuster.
Go See forget about all the hate everyone wants to be a critic. It's fun it's entertaining and it is worth the money. All The bad press is just HATE, for the sake of hating. With Ice Age and the Jonny Depp movie coming out I'm sure it will drop off but still a good entertaining sequel.

I paid for advanced tickets and stood in line at the midnight show, hoping and praying that this would be good, by the time I got out I was cringing with sickening rage, I tried to get my money back but the ticket tellers went home, so congrats Bay you got my $14 and I got racists robots and disgusting toilet humor. Plus my kids hate me because I wont let them go see it, so thanks again Bay!

Dark Knight and Transformers. When nerds ruled the world! mwhahahahahaha. I see these numbers for Iron Man 2, and depending how Thor and Captain America movies turn out to be, i can see the Avengers movie making some hardcore bank also. Whether they are great, good, and sort of bad, i'm just glad i'm alive for these movies

okay, lets be real: the only reason the movie made this much movie is because everyone wants to see Megan Fox and her cleave. Its no big secret....secret to success = megan fox

"the movie made this much" money. Sorry.....

I thought the movie was pretty good. Mindless entertainment. Sometimes you need that. The first half could have been better though.

Can't believe the retards that defend this movie. Have movie audiences really sunk that low? For all you idiots who think this was a great movie, I'd really love to see what you think a bad movie is. And why.
