Judge Dredd Relaunch Takes a Meeting
November 23, 2009
In 1995, the 2000 A.D. anti-hero Judge Dredd was brought to the big screen in the form of Sylvester Stallone, and it bombed pretty badly after being trashed by critics. It was generally known to be one of the worst comic book adaptations in a decade rife with them.
Roughly two months ago, it was announced that 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland was tackling the screenplay for another attempt at a Dredd movie for DNA Films, and over the weekend, comic artist Mark Simpson who draws under the pen name "Jock" mentioned the fact that he had a meeting to talk about the Judge Dredd movie on Monday. i.e. today. (Writer Andy Diggle may also be involved with this meeting, although he's being slightly more coy about it if so.)
Our British readers will realize that Jock drew Judge Dredd in "2000 AD" for a number of years, working with writer Andy Diggle before the two of them kicked off the DC/Vertigo relaunch of The Losers, which some may be aware is being turned into a movie directed by Sylvain White next April.
After seeing Jock's mention on Twitter, we did a bit of digging around and found that Comic Book Movie had posted some pretty cool concept art from the artist which you can drool over here.
As of yet, no director has been announced, but who knows? Maybe Jock will announce it on his Twitter feed after having this meeting. Let the speculation begin...

I don't really see why we need this, but if they feel they've got something cool on their hands then I say go for it.
It can't be worse than the original.

The origional dredd was an awesome movie... For the first ten minutes until the helmet came off....

Really? I like the idea of Jason Statham doing this. He's a natural.

I liked the 1995 Judge Dredd. a bit cheesy here and there, but it was interesting. I would like to see another version of this movie. Still a better thought than most movie ideas lately.

Love the idea... no J.S though... pretty please...

Lets just get a decent villain this time, and a decent story.
Dark judges anyone? or how about Dredd trying to avert nuclear war, and repel an invading force from East-Meg, whilst judging some arseholes on the way?

I my self would be keen on Ray Stevenson

It's about time they did a good movie about Dredd. He's great and have become a franchiser long time ago.I too agree that the stallone movie was great for about five minutes until the helmet comes off. However they should go with someone who will agree to hide his face for the most(if not all)the movie, and i don't think anyone well known actor will agree to that.

i dont think they will get a big name for dredd. stallone has no chance of returning i would have thought - shame cos i think he was good, and now hes older he would still be a good choice

The Sly version of '95 wasn't Dredd, more like Demolition Man in a helmet. As far as I'm concerned a Judge Dredd movie hasn't been made to date.
It better be dark, dirty and brutally violent.

I lOVED the 1995 Judge Dredd movie!
Some cheese but not enough to dilute the quality.

I have a feeling that the director will be Mark Millar. He has stated that he is going to be directing a movie in March next year. He will not be drawn on the title of the project but I would say the odds are pretty good that Mr Millar will be making his debut feature. After all he has been hanging out with Temur Berbaktov(Wanted) and Matt Vaughn (Kick-Ass).

i hope its not straight to video . no problems with it being dark and violent, just hope its good. faithful to the comics a bit more. 95 dredd definitely had its good points, if only there was an alternate version, im sure there was a good film in there somewhere

I liked the 95 Dredd, it was fun, I'll still tune in when they air it on tv when there is nothing better on, but again I knew nothing of the source material then, and never really looked into it since then.

the only issue with the 1995 judge dredd is it seemed to be as cheezy as demolition man. now demolition man was a brilliant rainchild of the people who made heathers and action jackson. judge dredd seemed a pale imitation of that as opposed to the simple brilliance it was.

Hmmm .... We want someone that would keep the helmet on and agree to hide their face most of the time?
Ray Park?

I think Jasaon Stathman has the jaw for it. And he's a cool enough actor and British, so he'll get the helmet joke.
As for everyone screaming, "It's got to be DARK!" no, it does not. Making it dark mean removal of plot and character for "dark" scenes. The best Dredd stories came from the ironic twists on the law with an uncompromising character.
The Dark Judges would be great, but not for the first one. They work only because by the time they showed up, you know who Dredd is and how his world works.
@SHanks-
The problem is giving him lines! As you know, the law clearly states that Ray Park is also not allowed to have lines.

The orginial was a great movie. A reboot isn't going to do any better.

The topic should be simple like a day in the life of Dredd. Just have him on patrol dealing with all the threats he takes on in the comic. Like Block War, The League of Fatties, and examples of the strick laws in Mega City One (i.e. 6 months for littering). Then you have the big threat in the backstory.
One idea is having a guy communicate with an unknown villain. All the audience knows that it is something supernatural. At the end it is revealed to be none other than Judge Death. Just keep it simple.

Whose the guy that played "Juggernaut". Comedy, although pitch black, is a big part of Dredd. I think Terry Gilliam would be great, of course I think that every movie should be made by Gilliam.

The first movie was fine as is, without Rob Schnieder.

I totally agree with Edward Douglas. Jason Statham would be brilliant for Judge Dredd. Would be really cool to see him as the lead in a big movie like this.
Of course being a upcoming movie casting comments board there will obviously be loads of mentions for Nathan Fillion and of course Bruce Campbell to play Dredd!
Posted by: drake on November 23, 2009 at 13:04:56
An unknown should play Dredd, so the audience can speculate what he looks like. Do like in the comics, shots behind his head if his helmet is off, and anyone who sees his face, dies.
I'll play Dredd, I've been bulking up for months I got the physique and the jaw for it. lol

OMG I CAN'T WAIT!!! I hated the original movie but I love Alex Garland so I'm not worried about the script, but we'll see who the acting talent turns out to be.
Posted by: mike adams on November 23, 2009 at 15:00:38
cant wait for this . I'd rather statham than someone like gerard butler who is just awful. if only clint eastwood hadn't had quite so many birthdays !
